Man with explosives stopped at Texas airport (Reuters)

(Reuters) - By Jim Forsyth

SAN ANTONIO, Dec 31 (Reuters) ? A man found to be carrying explosives in "military grade wrapping" was detained at a western Texas airport on Saturday, forcing the evacuation of the area, officials said.

The explosives were found during a routine inspection at a security checkpoint inside Midland International Airport, Midland city spokeswoman Tasa Watts said. The Transportation Security Administration evacuated the terminal and conducted a security sweep, she said.

The incident at the airport in Midland, which is about 280 miles northwest of San Antonio, came as many Americans set out on airplane trips for the New Year's Day holiday.

No details were immediately available about the man or why he had the explosives, which Watts said were "wrapped in military grade wrapping."

TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said the "suspicious item" was found in a carry-on bag.

"The checkpoint was closed for approximately one hour while officials investigated and removed the item from the checkpoint area," Farbstein said.

4 Tips to Lowering Your Auto insurance Bills | Madame Noire | Black ...

An insurance policy is just a promise that the company who issued it will offer you help and indemnity in the event of a loss. However, while many promises are free, automobile insurance is not. Furthermore, many states require you to have it to even drive your car on the public roads and many loan companies require insurance before you drive off the lot with a financed car. ?Whether you pay a lot or a little, there are some ways you can reduce your car insurance bills even more.

"affordable car insurance"Pay it in full. Most insurance companies offer you two options for payments: monthly installments or paying the policy in one lump sum. If you choose to make monthly payments, the company adds a convenience fee to each payment that can range from one to five dollars. Over the years, those fees add up. Consider paying in full each policy period to avoid unnecessary charges. If that?s not possible, ask your insurance company about automatic payments from your checking account because they often waive the fees if you sign up.

Invest in your safety. Many insurance companies also offer discounts for safety features on your car. Anti-lock brakes, multiple air bags and other safety equipment can lower your bills. If you also take a driver improvement or safety class approved by your company, you can see a substantial discount. Be prepared to show verification of these things if the company requests it.

Go to liability only coverage when you can. Liability coverage is coverage for damage you and your car cause to other people or property. If your state requires automobile insurance, this is the coverage it?s looking for you to carry. Physical damage coverage covers your car in the event of claim and is generally only required if you have a loan on the car. Once your car gets old enough that the cost of insuring it for physical damage outweighs its value, it?s time to drop to liability only, bringing your policy cost down with it.

Stop switching insurance companies every year. Although it?s possible to change insurance companies as much as you?d like, you should think twice before you do. Most companies offer some sort of discount for long term customers. If you can?t stay with your company, just make sure your switch doesn?t cause any gaps in your coverage. If you have continuous insurance, you often qualify for a discount when you switch to your new insurer.

Gadget design is in a pretty good place these days. Even companies like Sony and Dell—known to commit many a design atrocity in their days—are starting to make devices that look pretty. Afghanistan, China sign first oil contract (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Afghanistan's government signed a deal Wednesday with China's state-owned National Petroleum Corporation, allowing it to become the first foreign company to exploit the country's oil and natural gas reserves.

The contract, which covers the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab, is the first of several such blocks to be put on the market in coming months, Afghan Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani said during the signing ceremony.

Bidding information for blocks in neighboring Balkh province will be released at the end of February, and for the western Herat province by next summer, he said.

Afghanistan has been seeking to find ways to exploit some of its mineral wealth to offset the loss of revenues when foreign aid and spending drops when international combat troops leave by the end of 2014. The government has been keen to develop an oil-extraction and refining capability for the landlocked nation, which is entirely reliant on fuel imports from neighboring Iran and Central Asian nations.

"This will bring enormous financial benefits to the government," Shahrani said. "It will be an important step toward self-sufficiency."

The ministry listed the initial value of the project with CNPC as $700 million. But the total could be ten times greater if more reserves are found and developed, and if international oil prices remain at today's levels, Shahrani said.

The fuel pact allows the Chinese firm to research oil and natural gas blocks in Sari Pul and Faryab, an area known as the Amu Darya River Basin that was first explored by Soviet engineers in the 1960s. The Soviets estimated the reserves at about 87 million barrels, but both the Afghan and Chinese partners believe they will prove to be much larger.

CNPC will also build a refinery ? Afghanistan's first ? within the next three years, after the real size of the reserves is established with greater accuracy, said Lu Gong Xun, president of CNPC's international branch.

Shahrani said the deal calls for the Afghan government to receive 70 percent of the profits from the sale of the oil and natural gas. CNPC will also pay 15 percent in royalties, as well as corporate taxes and rent for the land used for its operations.

Afghanistan's army and police will set up special units to guard the project, Shahrani said.

The provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab are located hundreds of miles from the centers of fighting in the east and southeast and are considered relatively safe. As a result, the U.S.-led NATO force has already transferred or is turning over responsibility for security in large parts of the region to the Afghan army and police.

Surveys conducted by the Soviets have shown that Afghanistan sits on vast mineral wealth. Afghan and foreign companies already have shown interest, notably in its untapped copper, iron and oil deposits. But with poor infrastructure and security problems stemming from the 10-year war, most Western mining companies have shied away from firm commitments.

So far, companies from China ? with which Afghanistan shares a small stretch of border in its east ? have been in the forefront of investments in the nation.

Three years ago the China Metallurgical Construction Co. signed a contract to develop the Aynak copper mine in Logar province. Beijing's $3.5 billion stake in the mine is the largest foreign investment in Afghanistan so far.

The U.S. Defense Department has put a $1 trillion price tag on Afghanistan's mineral reserves. Other estimates have pegged it at $3 trillion or more.

But the potential windfall for the landlocked country will require international investment, a better transportation network and much improved security.

"This government must stand on its feet," said Mustafa Zahir, the head of the government's environment agency. "Without using our natural resources we cannot achieve this."

Thanks to Gaga, Adele, music business finally improves in 2011 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Among musicians, "flat" is a word you don't want to hear. But to the industry, flat is truly music to everyone's ears.

Soundscan's sales year doesn't end until January 1, but current year-to-year comparisons have album sales for 2011 ahead of comparable 2010 business.

OK, it's only by a whisker of 1 percent. But it is welcome news in an industry where album sales for 2010 were down 13 percent from 2009. And prior to that they'd been down an average of 8 percent every year through the 2000s, suggesting an incredible shrinking music business.

This year reversed the trend, but there is a cloud buried in the silver lining: the success stories of 2011 will not be easy to replicate.

The year's two biggest albums were Adele's "21" and Michael Buble's "Christmas" -- and even the most copycat-prone execs aren't foolish enough to start looking for pleasingly plump Englishwomen or Sinatra-bred carolers to sign.

Regardless of how applicable the lessons might be, here's our look back at what worked and what didn't in 2011:

RETRO ROCKS -- IF YOU DON'T CALL IT RETRO

Artists from Adele to the Black Keys thrived by recalling good old days for oldsters while seeming utterly contemporary to kids who'd rebel at the word "throwback."

At last tally, Adele's "21" had sold 5,281,000; with two sales weeks yet to be reported, the blockbuster should finish out the year a little shy of 6 million. (The only release in the past few years to cross the 6 million mark was Taylor Swift's "Fearless.") Moreover, she sold an additional 750,000 copies this year of her previous album, "19."

Adele is a singles artist, too. "Rolling in the Deep" has sold 5,665,000 downloads, followed by "Someone Like You" with 3,352,000, "Set Fire to the Rain" with 963,000, and "Rumour Has It" with 551,000.

On a smaller but louder end of the spectrum, the Black Keys put the lie to "rock is dead" theories -- again -- by moving 426,000 copies this year of their two-year-old "Brothers." Their brand new "El Camino," whose nostalgic aspects lean more toward glam-rock than neo-blues, has sold an impressive 293,000 units in two weeks.

BET ON THE RIGHT CAROLER

Everyone guessed there'd be a big Christmas album this year. Almost everyone guessed it'd be Justin Bieber's. But Buble's sold 1,964,000 of his holiday CD, versus Bieber's 1,003,000.

We should have seen it coming, since Buble's previous album quietly sold 2 million-plus. Despite his crooner image, Buble's holiday set wisely had something for everyone, whereas Bieber's had something to annoy just about everyone outside his core.

"Christmas" currently stands at No. 3 on the list of 2011's bestsellers, and will surpass Lady Gaga to land at No. 2 by January 1.

Again, maybe not a surprise to anyone who recalled how Josh Groban's "Noel" became 2008's surprise bestseller.

FORGET WHAT WE SAID ABOUT ROCK NOT BEING DEAD

The news wasn't so great if you weren't the Black Keys. One of the biggest bands of the 2000s, Evanescence, belly flopped with their self-titled third album, which has sold an anemic 284,000 units in 10 weeks and currently sits at No. 101.

Some other big rock names did just OK. Coldplay sold 877,000 copies of "Mylo Xyloto" in eight weeks -- impressive, until you remember their last album sold 721,000 in one week.

Don't call Blink-182's "Neighborhoods" a comeback. The dormant superstars' return moved 259,000 units in 10 weeks. Their current neighborhood (No. 200 on the Billboard 200)? The chart ghetto.

Daughtry looked to be one of the big sellers of this holiday season, on paper, but their new album sits at No. 27, having sold 241,000 in a month.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers sold 458,000 of their latest, leaving a long road to catch up with the two and a half million their last effort managed. The term "red hot" just doesn't seem to apply to anything related to rock ...

Unless, of course, it's U2's "360" tour, officially the highest grossing ever. Their lengthy worldwide trek brought in $293 million, playing to 2.8 million patrons.

SINGLES ARTISTS VS. ALBUM ARTISTS

Adele and Taylor Swift sometimes appear to be the only acts who can move millions of long-players and singles. Swift's 2010 release "Speak Now" sold another 902,000 copies this year, upping its total to 3.9 million.

But the trend is toward acts like LMFAO, who had far and away the year's biggest single with "Party Rock Anthem" -- a 4,579,000 seller as of mid-month.

The dance duo also have the current top-selling single with "Sexy and I Know It," with 2,544,000 downloads. Another song, "Shots," has moved 1,540,000. Fans clearly prefer the a la carte approach. The act with the year's top-selling song can only lay claim to the 56th best-selling album, as "Sorry for Party Rocking" has sold 401,000 copies.

The ultimate example of a singles-only act: Hot Chelle Rae. The pop group won best new artist at the American Music Awards, after their "Tonight Tonight" single sold an astonishing 2,382,000 singles. The subsequent album has moved 31,000 copies in three weeks.

Britney Spears may also fall into this category now. Her "Femme Fatale" did better than expected, given a run of bad pre-release publicity, but its 725,000-copy total wasn't good enough to push it into the top 20 sellers of the year.

NEW COUNTRY VS. OLD(ER) COUNTRY:

It used to be that country was the genre most hospitable to mid-career artists. Tell that to Martina McBride, who's sold a mere 119,000 in 10 weeks. Toby Keith is down to No. 28 after just eight weeks, with an OK 266,000 tally, the kind of number he used to do in just his opening week.

So who's barnstorming down the dirt road? Country's new guard of guys. Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party," a late 2010 release, has racked up a 2.2 million total, and it moved back up to No. 16 in the week prior to Christmas. No other album that's been out more than a year has anywhere near that ongoing momentum.

For second-tier success stories, check out Eric Church at 504,000 units, Luke Bryan at 580,000 with his latest, the Zac Brown Band adding 720,000 to their 2010 album's total -- and Scotty McCreery, putting an end to the recent "Idol" curse with 748,000 and counting.

One female-fronted group broke through the wall of dudes: the Band Perry added 666,000 to the 998,000 total for their debut album, which will be well over a million by year's end -- capitalizing on their 3.5 million-selling single, "If I Die Young," the funeral song of the millennium.

DID HIP-HOP FAIL TO WATCH ITS THRONE?

Eminem had the top-selling album last year, but there were no such contenders in 2011. Lil Wayne had the best first-week tally, selling over a million -- but he has yet to double that. Still, his "Tha Carter IV" is the year's fourth-best seller, with 1,826,000 so far.

Jay-Z's and Kanye West's "Watch the Throne" is up to 1,116,000, but was expected to have done better. Drake's sophomore "Take Care" will soon surpass it. As for the old guard, you only have to look to The Game to see who's lost his game, with a braggadocio-defying 222,000 units.

LOSS LEADERS TAKE A LOSS

Lady Gaga should end up with the third best-selling album of the year, after Adele and Buble -- but it'll always have a steroid-sized asterisk, since first-week sales were goosed by a controversial 99-cent sale on Amazon.com. Billboard allowed the sub-dollar sales when they celebrated a million-plus opening week for "Born This Way," but later announced they wouldn't include virtual giveaways in the future.

That's not to say Gaga's fans aren't willing to shell out where it counts: at the box office. Her concert trek grossed $72 million -- even without putting any tickets on sale at the Dollar Store. She was the only performer under 30 besides Swift to land among Billboard Boxscore's top 10 money-making tours, a realm otherwise largely populated by the veteran likes of U2, Bon Jovi and Roger Waters.

With music shelf space still shrinking at big-box stores, which of course helped kill dedicated music outlets during the flush years, it's doubtful whether music can manage another up or flat year in 2012.

That might take Adele breaking her every-other-year release pattern and giving us a surprise "22" on the inevitable path to "23."

Paw Pree, once refugee from Myanmar, is now lifeline for others: Community Heroes 2011

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- At age 16, Paw Pree was separated from her family and on the run, fleeing an oppressive military regime in her homeland, Burma.

A member of the minority Karen tribe, Pree joined 15 other runaways and worked her way through jungles and safe houses, eventually finding shelter in a refugee camp in Thailand, where she lived for seven years.

Now she lives in a Lakewood apartment, attends Cuyahoga Community College, plans to go to nursing school and works as a social worker at Asian Services in Action.

Because of her language skills -- she speaks Thai, Burmese, English and her native tongue, Karen -- and her commitment to helping people, Pree is a lifeline for other Southeast Asian refugees being resettled in the Cleveland area.

"I love working with people," Pree, 25, said in a recent interview. "As a Christian, Jesus is my role model. He helped and cured a lot of people."

Between 400 and 500 refugees, Muslims and Christians, from Burma (now known as Myanmar) are living in Greater Cleveland, Pree said. "I'm the one who can talk to them," she said. "I'm their voice."

But she is more than just an interpreter. And she helps non-Asians as well, mentoring preschool to high school kids through an Asian Services program.

"She might get a call at 2 a.m. from someone saying, 'I'm in the hospital,' and she will go there," said her supervisor, Kitty Leung. "People generally rely on her a lot."

While living in the camp, Pree studied English and was an outreach worker for the American Refugee Committee, which was providing services there and working to resettle the more than 4,000 residents of the camp.

Year after year, Pree hoped to get free, but she knew that those who got out usually had family or political connections in the Western world.

It was a sad life, she said, watching people come and go and checking a board every day to see whether her name was posted for a departure, only to be let down over and over again.

"I felt no hope, no future living in the camp," she said. "You live to die."

Finally, in 2008, Pree saw her name posted. "I was so happy," she said. "I ran to my supervisor and said, 'I found my name. I'm going to be leaving you soon.' "

Thirty minutes later, she said, she was told she was going to Cleveland. "I said, 'Where's Cleveland? Do you have a map?' "

More heroes

Every year The Plain Dealer highlights people in Greater Cleveland who saw a need and stepped up to answer it -- sometimes risking injury to save lives, sometimes risking time and effort to make a change in the community. Here are the heroes of the past three years and a link to all of this year's stories.

Two days later -- July 16, 2008 -- she landed in Cleveland. "I'm all by myself all the way," she said. "I don't even know who's going to pick me up."

A person from Catholic Charities met her at the airport and shuttled her to a new life in a strange new world.

"You have to have hope," Pree said. "And be willing to work hard."

Pree, who has two brothers and one sister, has not seen her family since she fled her homeland. And her father and mother, rice farmers, have no phone.

When she got to Cleveland, it was arranged for her to call her mother who had to walk an hour and a half to a phone.

But Pree didn't want to say too much in their conversation because she believed the phones could be tapped and her family fears the majority's regime.

"I said, 'Hi mom,' " Pree said, recalling her first contact with her mother in seven years. "She was quiet. I said, 'Are you there?' "

Pree said she deeply misses her family, but her faith, she said, tempers the pain of separation.

"Even if we don't see each other one more time," she said. "We have hope that we will see each other in Heaven."

Cypress Hill Smokeout Festival 2012 should have the same tenacity as last year, with headliners including Sublime with Rome, Korn, Wiz Khalifa, Cypress Hill, The Dirty Heads and Caf? Tacuba. ?More announcements are sure to come in the near future regarding the other bands that will be playing.

The festival comes equipped with Medical Marijuana Expo, which includes hemp industry exhibits and expert panel discussions. ?Those with club cards can smoke out at the Patient Consumption Area, although the entire festival ends up feeling like a consumption area. ?I mean, come on, the food court is even dubbed as?the ?Massive Munchie Garden?.

Bollywood rediscovered heroes in 2011 (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Bollywood struck gold in 2011, revving up lacklustre box offices in India with help from its leading men who wooed audiences back to cinemas after a dismal 2010.

Domestic revenues hit 19.25 billion rupees ($363.2 million) this year, up from 14.5 billion rupees in 2010, and an unprecedented four films crossed the billion rupee milestone. Two of those blockbusters starred actor Salman Khan.

The solid performance contrasted sharply to the previous year when there were hardly any hits.

"Audiences and filmmakers have gone back and discovered stories that are close to our Indian roots," said Sanjeev Lamba, Chief executive of Reliance Entertainment, which produced two of the year's biggest blockbusters -- "Bodyguard" and "Singham".

"Bodyguard", in which Khan plays a personal security guard to a rich man's daughter and ends up falling in love with her, was the most successful Bollywood film, raking in more than 1.5 billion rupees ($28 million) at domestic box offices.

"Singham" told the story of a right-minded police officer who stands up to a corrupt politician and was accompanied by romance, drama and high-octane action.

Both "Bodyguard" and "Singham" were panned by critics but loved by audiences. And both featured strong central characters, harkening back to the 1980s and early '90s in Bollywood when films were centred on the hero and his defeat of a villain in a battle of good versus evil.

"Audiences have always loved the dilemmas of the hero, a little bit of action, some drama and some romance," Lamba said. "We had a lot of that this year."

Other themes were successful, too.

Offbeat films like "The Dirty Picture", based on the life of a soft-core porn star, proved to be sleeper hits and took industry analysts by surprise. Together with the likes of "Singham" and "Bodyguard", these smaller films proved audiences have an appetite for both mass market and niche-oriented work.

"It is not that more people are watching movies, but that the same audience is watching more movies," said Shailesh Kapoor of Ormax Media, a firm that specialises in film market research.

"HARRY POTTER" HOT; "RA.ONE" NOT

But widely-hyped movies like superhero film "Ra.One" were a let-down.

In spite of a publicity blitzkrieg, actor Shah Rukh Khan's film did not live up to expectations with around 1.2 billion rupees ($22 million) in net box office. That was just a bit more than its official budget of a billion rupees. Industry estimates put the film's cost at over 1.5 billion rupees.

Aside from that, for the most part, Bollywood managed to keep its purse strings in check, with production houses learning that budgeting a film right is half the battle.

"Balaji Motion Pictures made 'The Dirty Picture' at a budget of less than 300 million rupees but have chosen themes and subjects which are interesting, and (they) publicised their films so well that audiences have felt compelled to watch them," said industry analyst Vajir Singh.

Big studios like Reliance and UTV also have changed their business models, preferring to co-produce films rather than acquire them after completion. Last year, Reliance suffered losses after two big-ticket acquisitions, Mani Ratnam's "Raavan" and Hrithik Roshan-starrer "Kites" flopped at box offices.

"This year, all our films have been co-productions or our own productions and we have seen the successes," Lamba said.

"We prefer to be creatively involved from the beginning of the project rather than coming in at the end in an acquisition scenario."

Indian audiences also warmed up to Hollywood blockbusters including "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" and "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" -- something that wasn't seen until just a few years ago due mainly to Bollywood's dominance of the box office.

"These days, the box office collections of good Hollywood films can rival those of a Bollywood film," said Sunil Punjabi, chief executive of the Cinemax chain of multiplexes.

"The Adventures of Tintin," which was released along with Ranbir Kapoor's "Rockstar" in November, made more than 70 million rupees its opening weekend

More Than 26,000 U.S. Jobs To Be Created in First-Quarter 2012 as 244 Industrial Plants Begin Operations

SUGAR LAND--December 23, 2011--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The subject of jobs, or a lack thereof, has been on many peoples' minds for the entirety of 2011. In the post-recession environment, millions remain out of work, and finding a solution to this situation has been problematic for the highest levels of government. While the unemployment rate has been dropping in recent months, the level of jobs creation has been slow and is not likely to improve in the coming year, given the economic uncertainty facing the United States and the rest of the world.

Canada Further Expands Sanctions Against Syria

(No. 390 - December 23, 2011 - 10:15 a.m. ET) Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced new sanctions on Syria?s Assad regime in response to its ongoing and escalating repression of Syrians:

?Despite increased international condemnation, the senseless violence against the Syrian people continues to claim lives.

?Canada is therefore continuing to step up its pressure on the regime and those who support it by introducing additional targeted sanctions.

?These measures prohibit all imports, with the exception of food, from Syria; all new investment in Syria; and the export to Syria of equipment, including software, for the monitoring of telephone and Internet communications. Canada is also imposing an assets freeze and prohibiting economic dealings with additional individuals and entities associated with the Assad regime.

?Canada stands with the Syrian people in their efforts to secure for themselves a brighter future. We look forward to a new Syria that respects the rights of its people and lives in peace with its neighbours.

?Canada remains committed to working with our international partners to bring pressure to bear on the Assad regime.

?Sanctions imposed by like-minded partners, including the United States and the European Union, and recently by the Arab League are having an impact in isolating the regime.?

On December 15, 2011, Canada announced a voluntary evacuation of its citizens in Syria and expedited efforts to help them leave the country as soon as possible. We continue to urge all Canadians in Syria to leave immediately, while commercial means are still available.

Context

On May 24, 2011, Canada announced targeted sanctions against the Syrian regime and some designated individuals and entities in response to the ongoing violent crackdown by Syrian military and security forces against Syrians peacefully protesting for democracy and human rights. These measures, which remain in place, were a blend of administrative measures and actions taken under the authority of the Special Economic Measures Act and were consistent with initiatives taken by like-minded partners, including the United States and the European Union.

On August 13, 2011, Canada expanded sanctions by seeking to freeze the assets of four additional individuals and two additional entities associated with the Syrian regime and to ensure that those people believed to be inadmissible to Canada would be prevented from travelling to Canada. Measures implemented by Canada included a prohibition on dealing in the property of listed individuals and entities?including the provision of financial services and making property available for their benefit?and travel restrictions.

Canadian Measures

  1. Travel restrictions: Canada ensured that persons associated with the Syrian government who are believed to be inadmissible to Canada are prevented from travelling to Canada.
  2. An asset freeze: Canada imposed an asset freeze against people associated with the current Syrian regime and entities involved in security and military operations against the Syrian people.
  3. A ban on specific exports and imports: Canada placed a ban under the Export and Import Permits Act on the export from Canada to Syria of goods and technology that are subject to export controls. These items include arms, munitions, and military, nuclear and strategic items that are intended for use by the Syrian armed forces, police or other governmental agencies.
  4. A suspension of all bilateral cooperation agreements and initiatives with Syria.

The measures announced are consistent with Canada?s foreign policy priority to promote freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law around the world. Canada stands with the Syrian people in their calls for a brighter future for Syria.

A news release announcing the May 24 sanctions can be found at PM announces sanctions on Syria.

For more information on the August 13 announcement, please visit Statement by Minister Baird on Situation in Syria.

On October 4, 2011, Canada imposed the following additional measures:

  1. A prohibition on the importation, purchase or transportation of petroleum or petroleum products from Syria.
  2. A prohibition on new investment in the Syrian oil sector.
  3. A prohibition on the provision or acquisition of financial services for the purpose of facilitating the importation, purchase or transportation of Syrian petroleum or petroleum products.
  4. A prohibition on the provision or acquisition of financial services for the purpose of investing in the Syrian oil sector.

Bahrain police attack Shiite opposition offices (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Security forces firing rubber bullets and tear gas attacked the headquarters of Bahrain's main Shiite opposition party in the capital on Friday after the group challenged a new government ban on its weekly protests. Police also used tear gas to disperse hundreds of opposition supporters attempting to protest elsewhere in the capital.

"I was really shocked to see tear gas and rubber bullets hit our offices," said vice president of the Al Wefaq party, Sheik Hussain Al Daihi. He said he was inside the building with foreign journalists when the security forces attacked and that a 13-year-old girl among those hurt had a serious injury to her thigh.

Friday's clampdown was the latest episode in 10 months of unrest between Bahrain's Sunni monarchy and an opposition movement led by the country's majority Shiites, who have long complained of discrimination.

"We are a people that won't be broken. All this repression and brutality is the source of our strength and determination to continue the struggle and defend our national rights," Al Daihi said later in a statement.

Authorities banned the weekly Friday protests for the first time since emergency laws were lifted in June. The Interior Ministry "gave silly excuses" to ban the event, including that it would block traffic and endanger others in the area, Al Daihi said.

Defying government orders, Shiite clerics on Friday also held prayer services on the rubble of mosques that had been bulldozed by authorities earlier this year. It was the first time that Shiite clerics have actively taken part in the protest movement, openly defying the government.

The Shiite clerics say at least 38 mosques used by their congregations were destroyed since the protests began in February.

"We will start a campaign to defend our religious sites and the first such activity starts with a protest at the end of the prayer at Diraz grand mosque," senior Shiite cleric Sheik Isa Qassim said during his Friday sermon. Diraz is an opposition stronghold northwest of the capital.

"We demand democracy for one people, Sunni and Shiite, and we understand the approach of the government that aims to divide our people. We are the ones who insist on unity, and because of this we are targeted by the government," he said.

Qassim called on international allies of Bahrain to exert pressure on the government because of what he said was it lack of will to reform.

Bahrain is a key U.S. ally in the Gulf and is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Since February, at least 40 people have been killed.

Hundreds of activists have been detained and brought to trial on anti-state charges in a special security court set up after authorities imposed marital law and invited a Saudi-led Gulf military force into the country to help deal with dissent in the tiny island kingdom.

Bahrain lifted emergency rule in June. Since then, government opponents have clashed with police almost every night.

Live SmackDown results for Dec. 23, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. ? After emotional wins just days earlier at WWE TLC, new World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan and new United States Champion Zack Ryder both continued to soar on the penultimate SmackDown of 2011.

World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan & Big Show def. Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger (WATCH | PHOTOS)
1344371027001|03:37As new World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan battled former United States Champion Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, Vickie Guerrero and Jack Swagger all circled the action at ringside. But as tensions grew outside the ring, Swagger decided to attack Show, leading to the two tussling in the ring. In an effort to avoid total chaos, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long charged in and announced the bout was now a tag team bout. After Big Show worked over Swagger pretty good, Bryan seized the victory for his team by making The All-American American tap out to his pain-inducing LeBell Lock.

WWE Tag Team Champion Kofi Kingston def. Primo (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Following up on Air Boom?s victory over Primo & Epico at WWE TLC, WWE Tag Champion Kofi Kingston defeated Primo in singles action with Trouble in Paradise.

Randy Orton RKO?d Wade Barrett onto the roof of a car (WATCH | PHOTOS)1344371088001|04:39
Wade Barrett took to the ring and offered his view on his encounters with Randy Orton and said Orton ??was one of the greatest in the history of WWE, until he encountered Wade Barrett.? As he finished his address, Barrett declared he should be next to face new World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan. Hearing enough of Barrett?s lip, The Viper decided to let his actions do the talking by storming in and bringing the fight to Barrett. As the two fought tooth-and-nail, they found themselves within the parking garage of the Richmond Coliseum, where WWE?s Apex Predator brutally RKO?d Barrett onto the roof of a parked car!

1344371065001|03:12Sheamus def. The Miz (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After Raw Superstar The Miz sauntered onto SmackDown ? declaring he was going to disrupt Teddy?s show ? he perhaps bit off more than he could chew when Long pit him against Sheamus. Although the former WWE Champion was a formidable foe, he proved no match for The Great White?s brutal Brogue Kick.

The Big Show vs. Mark Henry match was called off (WATCH | PHOTOS)1344373803001|02:29
As the two massive former World Heavyweight Champions prepared to clash for the opportunity to challenge Daniel Bryan, David Otunga called a stop to things. As the legal counsel to Executive Vice Present of Talent Relations and Interim General Manager of Raw John Laurinaitis, Otunga announced that Mark Henry was not medically cleared to compete and the match would not take place. After Otunga wished the WWE Universe happy holidays, Big Show dropped him with a brutal WMD to the jaw.

United States Champion Zack Ryder def. Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes in a Non-Title Match (WATCH | PHOTOS)
1344371040001|02:09Fresh off his big win at WWE TLC, United States Champion Zack Ryder looked sharp against Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes. But Booker T decided to interrupt their match and poke fun at his WWE TLC opponent by singing his own rendition of the holiday classic ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.? The distraction opened the door for Ryder to drop Rhodes with a Rough Ryder for the win. Afterward, Booker added insult to injury with some more ?singing.?

World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan evaluated himself (PHOTOS)
The night kicked off with Big Show describing his pride in winning the title he has sought for so long. But Mark Henry emerged to disparage Show and said he should quit WWE. Moments later, World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan came to the ring to compare himself to the rest of the WWE roster. After some self-criticism, Bryan was proud to declare himself World Heavyweight Champion.

Then, when Henry and Show argued about who should get a chance to face Bryan, Teddy declared the two would square off, with the winner being first in line to challenge him for his World Title. Next, Bryan feigned that he would shake hands with Henry, but then dissed The World?s Strongest Man when went to accept.

Hawks Pushing for U.S. Troops in Iraq

American hawks are blaming President Obama for a premature withdrawal from Iraq, as if a few thousand American troops could prevent the country's current sectarian convulsion. The peace movement needs to unite against the framing of this blame game in which Obama "is likely to draw new criticism for failing to negotiate an extension of the American troop presence in Iraq."

Kenneth Pollack, longtime supporter of the occupation says the present instability is "a clear and unmistakable challenge" to Obama's policy. The mainstream media has adopted the same narrative. The political theme of "losing" countries to foreign enemies is a powerful current in America's political culture.

The reality is that both Republicans and Democrats supported the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and his inevitable replacement by a Shiite-led majority coalition with close links to Iran and an enduring hostility to Iraq's Sunni minority. The notion of a united, secular and nationalist Iraq was a delusion. The regime in Baghdad is authoritarian, sectarian, and harbors dungeons where thousands of Sunnis have been tortured. Al-Maliki also is a deeply disturbed and paranoid leader who is haunted by fears of conspiracies everywhere.

Al-Maliki recently met with Obama to plead for American support of the faltering Assad dictatorship in Syria, clear evidence that al-Maliki sides with Iran in the region's geo-politics. The besieged Syrian majority is Syrian, and they share a long border with the Sunni-populated provinces of Iraq, such as Anbar province.

Iraq is spiraling towards brutal repression or civil war, unless the Sunni minority there is fortified by the Sunni-based revolution in Syria. That would potentially deter al-Maliki and Iran's ambitions in Iraq, and ironically align the US with some of the very Sunnis who supported the 2003 insurgency against the American invasion then turned around to fight with the Americans against al Qaeda's Iraqi branch.

Concerned Americans can do little if anything about these developments except encouraging the Obama administration to pressure for rapid, decisive and democratic change in Syria.

Some in the blogosphere claim that Obama isn't really withdrawing from Iraq. They couldn't be more wrong, as the storm gathers in Baghdad and mainstream blame mounts in the US. Fortunately for Obama, a vast majority of Americans are tired of Iraq and fully support the pullout - over 80 percent of Democrats and Independents, and 58 percent of Republicans.

Rich Chinese couple's octuplets spark anger, inquiry (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? A rich Chinese couple who had eight babies with the help of two surrogate mothers has been forced to move out of their villa following a public uproar, and could face a large fine for breaching strict family planning laws mandating only one child.

The couple in the booming southern metropolis of Guangzhou had the children last year, but the story only came to light after media discovered a picture of the babies -- four boys and four girls -- taken by a photography studio.

The couple turned to in vitro fertilization after years of trying to have children and spent nearly one million yuan ($157,800) on the procedure, state television CCTV reported this week.

The mother had three of the children herself, and the other five with two surrogates, though the couple had not intended to have so many.

After the babies were born last September and October, the couple hired eleven people, including eight baby sitters and a teacher, to take care of them, state television cited neighbors as saying.

The provincial government has set up a team to investigate the case, media added, especially as most people in China are only allowed to have one child.

"Why did they have to hire so many people to have babies for them? Did they think they had the right to bear children just because they were rich? This was their first mistake," Liao Xinbo, Guangdong's deputy health chief, told CCTV.

"Secondly, what respect to life did they show? Multiple pregnancies are super risky."

A family-planning official added that the couple may face a big fine for breaching the one-child policy.

However, some Chinese media have suggested that the couple may not have done the procedures in China, and that the children could have been born in Hong Kong, in which case they would escape punishment in the mainland.

The issue has triggered heated debate on China's Twitter-like microblogs.

"I don't understand why such law-breakers can still be left alone. Because they are rich, they can have as many babies as they like? That would create chaos!" wrote "Lingning" on Sina's Weibo.

"The case shows the worsening wealth gap in China. The rich, with their money in hand, are shattering social equality," added "A Late 2011."

However, some expressed a degree of sympathy and even envy.

"When I am rich enough, I will have two or three babies," wrote "Sha Guola."

China introduced its one-child policy in 1979 to limit births in the world's most populous nation. It has relaxed the rules somewhat in the past few years and some couples are now allowed to have a second child.
