Could change in U.S. economic philosophy solve financial crises ...

Many people are apprehensive of the direction in which the economy is going, and as these concerns over dire financial situations emerge across the world, people are actively searching for information.
All across the globe financial situations have become dismal for many countries. Here in the U.S., the economy and the "fiscal cliff" have been consistently making headlines as the government attempts to work out a solution to solve the nation's financial crisis. According to one news website, the term "economic collapse" is a common search term.

Economic Collapse News is a relatively new startup, launched in 2011. ECN is a U.S.-based independent news publication whose mission is "to report on economic crises and show why they are mostly caused by various government policies which distort and disfigure the marketplace."

Stephen Otto, founder of ECN, said that due to his interest in economics and, being a study of the Austrian School of thought, he indicates he wants ECN to offer information relating to the causes of economic crises and possible solutions based upon these principles.

Digital Journal recently spoke via email with the founder of Economic Collapse News and learned more about the business and the Austrian economic school of thought. According to Mr. Otto, the Austrian School's business cycle theory explains the causes of recessions, describing them as being "generally" caused by government intervention, especially central bank manipulations, creating economic distortions. According to the Austrian School's philosophy, proponents of Keynesian Economic policies have helped lead to the current financial crises. Digital Journal: Why did you start Economic Collapse News? Stephen Otto: When I started ECN I noticed that people were searching for information about the economy using the term "economic collapse". Being interested in economics and a student of the Austrian School of thought, I wanted to provide the information people were looking for with regard to the causes of economic crises, what the outlook for the future is, and potential solutions to the declining American economy. So I registered the domain economiccollapsenews.com and began writing about what I thought was happening to the economy based on my understanding of Austrian Economics. Digital Journal: What are your plans for 2013? Stephen Otto: What I want to continue doing in 2013 and beyond is to highlight the solutions that the Austrian School offers and direct people to the Mises Institute and other scholarly sources so they can learn what the true causes and solutions to economic recessions and depressions are. Digital Journal: What are your future goals? For instance, where do you hope to see Economic Collapse News in five years from now? Stephen Otto: Five years from now it is my hope that ECN will have grown in influence so that many more people will have an understanding of how the government and Federal Reserve are responsible for the substantial decline in the standard of living of Americans that I believe will take place during the next decade. It is important, I believe, that people put the blame for the coming rising prices where it belongs - namely the inflation of the money supply by the Federal Reserve. In our correspondence, Mr. Otto referred to Ron Paul, noting ECN "is partly inspired by him and other libertarians" in carrying out its mission. Economic concerns are not only a growing issue, but one that has a long way to go in reaching a solution. As the U.S. economy continues to struggle, many are likely wondering whether or not policymakers can truly resolve issues. Perhaps this leads to the question of whether or not it should it be up to the government to intervene and try to fix economic rough spots? Or perhaps maybe the better question is whether or not current philosophies can get the U.S. out of debt? What do you think? Could change in U.S. economic philosophy solve financial crises?

PJC Field of Dreams moves closer to reality | Your online ...

J.P. Antonacci
BRANT NEWS

The Kiwanis Club and Grand Erie District School Board hope the City of Brantford will go the distance to make the proposed Brantford Field of Dreams sports facility at Pauline Johnson Collegiate a reality.

Kiwanis and the GEDSB have each committed $400,000 toward the $2 million project, a synthetic field and eight-lane track where youth and community groups could run track and play soccer, rugby, field lacrosse and football.

A representative from each organization appeared at Monday?s city council committee of the whole meeting to ask councillors for a further $400,000 to move the project forward.

?Given Kiwanis? major emphasis on supporting children?s projects, we see this as a good fit with our values and our goals,? said Kiwanis president Bob Johnson.

Kiwanis? donation hinges on the school board and city buying in. GEDSB vice chair David Dean said the proposed Colborne Street East facility was an easy sell for the board. On top of its initial $400,000 donation, the board will cover future operating expenses and look after administration, including bookings.

Brantford is in ?dire need? of a recreation centre in the city?s southeast, said Field of Dreams vice chair Neal Stamer. If his group builds it, Stamer hopes youth from every ward will come to the multi-sport field, which will boost the city?s image and help revitalize the area.

Coun. David Neumann is confident that the Field of Dreams would be well used and add ?a spark of life? to the Echo Place neighbourhood, which has recently lost a bowling alley and grocery store.

?By partnering with the school board, we will ensure that this becomes? more than just a school facility, but a community facility,? Neumann said.

The city would receive a $2 million facility for a one-time $400,000 investment without needing to manage or maintain it, Mayor Chris Friel noted. Friel endorsed the plan.

?I look forward to seeing this begin and really be a catalyst for a wonderful opportunity and a wonderful partnership,? he said.

The facility would be open to boys and girls sports clubs and be accessible to athletes with disabilities. The Field of Dreams committee has asked the Brantford Galaxy Soccer Club, Brantford Track and Field Club and Brant and District Football Club for input into the facility?s design.

Stamer said that, as of yet, the committee has not partnered with any post-secondary institutions, but talks continue.

The committee is looking for $250,000 in upfront city funding to secure the Kiwanis donation, with the balance to be paid out over three years.

Councillors directed staff to seek out an extra $250,000 and present a funding plan at the Sept. 24 city council meeting.

YouTube offers new iPhone app to fill looming void

(AP) ? YouTube is being reprogrammed for the iPhone and iPad amid the latest fallout from the growing hostility between Apple and the video service's owner, Google.

The new format debuted Tuesday with the release of a new YouTube application that will introduce more advertising and more videos on Apple's trend-setting devices.

The changes are being made because Google Inc. and Apple Inc. didn't renew a five-year licensing agreement that established YouTube as one of the built-in applications in the operating system that runs the iPhone and iPad.

YouTube is being bumped from the menu of pre-installed apps on the next version of Apple's mobile operating system, or iOS, which could be released as early as Wednesday when the latest iPhone is expected to be unveiled.

The updated iOS also is dumping Google's digital maps as its go-to source for directions.

The mapping snub stung Google, but Apple's removal of YouTube from the iOS's application line-up appears to be a less contentious decision.

The two rivals couldn't agree on the best way to watch YouTube on the iPhone and iPad, leading to the termination of the licensing agreement and leading to Google's development of a stand-alone YouTube app that can be downloaded for free in in Apple's iTunes store.

The licensing agreement had granted Apple control over the design of the built-in YouTube app on the iPhone and iPad.

The new YouTube app will create more moneymaking opportunities for Google and video producers because it allows advertising to be shown with the clips. That's something Apple hasn't allowed on the pre-installed YouTube app. The ban on ads prevented many music videos and other widely watched clips from being shown in the iOS app because some copyright owners don't allow their content to be shown if there is no way for them to be paid.

Removing the advertising limitations will mean users of the new iOS app can watch YouTube videos that already have been available on smartphones and tablet computers running on Google's Android software, said Francisco Varela, YouTube's global director of platform partnerships.

"We are offering a better user experience to iPhone users," Varela said of the new YouTube app. "We will now have content parity on all our mobile platforms."

Apple had no comment on Google's claims.

The new YouTube app is tailored for the iPhone, although it will work on the iPad, too. A retooled app specifically tailored for the iPad is supposed to be released in the next few months.

As has always been the case, YouTube's videos also can be watched through Web browsers that work on iOS, including Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome.

YouTube, the world's most popular video site, could still end up losing some of its audience on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch because device owners will have to find and download the app from Apple's App Store. YouTube says mobile viewers collectively watch more than 1 billion clips per day.

Many of those YouTube viewers watch on Android devices that have become Apple's bane. Before he died 11 months ago, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson that he viewed Android as a "stolen product" and vowed to get even with Google and its partners for ripping off his company's ideas.

The vendetta has spurred a series of lawsuits against Android device makers, including a case that culminated last month when a jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages after concluding Samsung Electronics violated iPhone patents.

Apple's decision to oust Google's mapping system from its family of mobile devices appears to be an attempt to divert revenue and traffic from Google. The upgraded iOS will feature Apple's own mobile mapping system.

That switch could hurt Google because maps are a key piece of the company's plans to sell more ads to local merchants.

Google appears confident YouTube will be wanted to gain more control over how YouTube worked on Apple's products, a goal that led to a decision to give up YouTube's prized status as a built-in app despite the potential loss in traffic. The licensing agreement allowed Apple to design the YouTube app for the iOS.

"They have been a great partner," Varela said of Apple. "Together, we have absolutely changed the mobile ecosystem. This is just the next evolution in this partnership. We are the only people that can build the best YouTube app."

Microsoft opens Windows Store app submissions to individuals, welcomes developers from 82 new markets

The march to the launch of Windows 8 soldiers on, as Microsoft has now opened the Windows Store for submissions from individuals in anticipation of the grand OS launch on October 26th. Previously, only those with company accounts were able to submit their applications for consideration in the Windows Store. The big news doesn't end there, however, as Microsoft has also added 82 new markets for app submission, which means that in total, developers from 120 markets may now publish their applications to the Windows Store.

In additional news, Microsoft has also revealed that many MSDN subscribers will receive a free, one-year developer account to the Windows Store -- eligible subscription levels include Visual Studio Professional, Test Professional, Premium, Ultimate, and BizSpark. Similarly, students that take part in Microsoft's DreamSpark program will have their subscription fees waived. As it stands, both Windows 8 apps and traditional applications may be submitted for inclusion in the Windows Store, however in the case of applications for the desktop environment, purchasers will be re-routed to individual developer sites to make their purchase and grab the download.

Glencore tells Xstrata investors its bid is final

LONDON (Reuters) - Commodities trader Glencore laid out what it said was a final $36 billion takeover offer for Xstrata on Monday, warning the miner's investors it would not improve the terms again after making concessions to woo recalcitrant shareholders.

Glencore, which already owns just over a third of Xstrata, confirmed its bid was now at 3.05 new shares for every Xstrata share held. This is up from 2.8 and in line with proposals made on Friday, following an unexpected turnaround that ended months of stalemate with the miner's second-largest investor, Qatar.

That level represents a 27 percent premium to the ratio at which Glencore and Xstrata were trading last week, when the market believed the deal would collapse.

"Glencore confirms that it is an all-share merger, and it will not increase the merger ratio further," the trading company said. "The increased merger ratio represents a substantial premium for a company with a 34 percent shareholder."

The offer released after a weekend of intense negotiations has been seen by those close to the deal as more conciliatory and less aggressive than proposals presented to Xstrata's board on Friday, just minutes before the miner's shareholders were due to vote on Glencore's original bid.

Glencore's chief executive and top shareholder Ivan Glasenberg still demands the top job in the combined entity, but the deal now retains a merger structure unless a change is approved by Xstrata - rather than shifting to a straightforward takeover requiring a simple majority to approve the bid.

It also provides for a balanced board, as in the original bid made in February, and makes the deal conditional on a retention scheme for the miner's senior managers - easing concerns about the operational risk of changes at the top.

Shares in Xstrata were up 2.4 percent at 1,038.5 pence at 0720 EDT, outperforming a 1.8 percent rise in the UK mining sector, while Glencore was down 1.2 percent. At those levels, the shares are trading around a higher ratio of 2.8, which would indicate the market is assigning a greater possibility that the deal will happen.

Qatar, which demanded in June a ratio of 3.25 to approve the deal, was considering its position on Monday after what one source familiar with the deal described as Glencore's "curveball" last week. Several sources had said Qatar was surprised by some of Glencore's provisions in Friday's proposal, including the departure of Xstrata Chief Executive Mick Davis, who has been implicitly backed by Qatar so far.

"Neither Davis going, nor the 3.05 were what the Qataris had in mind when they put their heads above the parapet in June," the source asked. "This is taking some thinking."

Xstrata, for its part, said its independent directors were considering the fresh bid and would respond by 0200 EDT on September 24 after consulting with major shareholders. At least one source involved in the deal said a response could come before then.

"The interesting dilemma is going to be that the Xstrata board, having supported the offer at 2.8 and now being presented with an offer at 3.05, is going to find it pretty hard to refuse it," said John Robinson, chairman of Global Mining Investments, a fund managed by BlackRock, Glencore's biggest investment management shareholder. "It now comes down to personalities."

One of Xstrata's 40 largest investors added: "The deal looks much more likely to happen now. I'd be surprised if the independent Xstrata directors say no."

GLASENBERG AT THE TOP

In line with proposals on Friday, Glencore's Glasenberg would take the top job at the expense of Xstrata boss Davis, a mining industry veteran who would have taken the chief executive role under the original offer. Davis, already one of the best-paid chief executives of the FTSE 100, was left bruised by a package to keep him in his job that was deemed too generous, and by Xstrata's decision to back a deal many investors disowned.

Glasenberg - said by one source close to the deal to have "pounced" on the opportunity to oust his long-time rival - will take over after an interim period of six months. Davis has held the top job at Xstrata for a decade, building it up from a $500 million collection of zinc and ferrochrome assets into the world's fourth-largest diversified miner.

Xstrata is on the cusp of a period of production growth, as it moves from older, more expensive mines to newer, more efficient projects, boosting volumes by 50 percent by 2014.

"The thing (Davis) was brought in to do, he's done. He's a dealmaker. He's not an operator," said one of Xstrata's top 30 shareholders. "(Xstrata's) operators, who bring these things in on time and in the money - compared to most other people - they're the brilliant guys and they're staying."

In a gesture to appease both the independent directors and shareholders fretting over management of these projects, Glencore said it would keep a retention scheme for top managers.

Glencore, however, signaled it could change a package, seen by some investors as too generous. One source said that could involve setting tougher performance targets.

Xstrata Chairman John Bond will keep the job in the combined group, as under the original proposals, and the board will be drawn evenly from the two companies.

A former chairman of Vodafone and HSBC, Bond is considered a steadier hand than Glencore chairman Simon Murray, but has also been criticized by some minority shareholders for recommending the initial Glencore offer.

Glencore made a long-awaited takeover bid for Xstrata in February. But the offer ran into trouble and had been expected to fail as shareholders prepared to vote last Friday, with Qatar and other investors opposed the terms of the deal.

The impasse was resolved in late-night talks at a London hotel, facilitated by former British prime minister Tony Blair.

Some fit obese individuals have no greater risk for chronic disease ...

(CBS News) Usually being obese means a higher chance of developing health problems. But, a new study shows that it is possible to be fat and fit ? and also to be at no greater risk for some chronic diseases.

People who were deemed ?metabolically healthy? obese individuals ? meaning they had no insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol or blood pressure issues ? had a lower risk of death than unfit obese individuals. They had no greater risk of death than normal weight fit people.

?It is well known that obesity is linked to a large number of chronic disease such as cardiovascular problems and cancer. However, there appears to be a sub-set of obese people who seem to be protected from obesity-related metabolic complications,? first author Dr. Francisco Ortega said in a press release. ?They may have greater cardio-respiratory fitness than other obese individuals, but, until now, it was not known the extent to which these metabolically healthy but obese people are at lower risk of diseases or premature death.?

The study was published in the European Heart Journal on Sept. 4.

The 43,265 participants in the study were all part of the ?Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study? (ACLS) between 1979 and 2003. The study participants were 98 percent white and mostly worked in executive or professional positions. About one fourth of the subjects were women.

Each subject completed a detailed questionnaire on their medical and lifestyle history, had a physical examination that included a test on their cardio-respiratory fitness and had measurements of height, weight, waist circumference and body fat percentage taken. Blood pressure, cholesterol and fasting glucose levels were also recorded. The researchers followed the subjects from when they entered the study until they died or until 2003.

Out of all the obese subjects, 46 percent were deemed ?metabolically healthy.? When all factors were accounted for, 38 percent of metabolically healthy yet obese people had a lower risk of death than their metabolically unfit obese peers. They also had no significant increased death risk compared to metabolically fit, normal weight participants.

It?s important to note that these ?metabolically fit? obese individuals regularly exercised and had a higher level of fitness than most obese people.

??There are two major findings derived from our study,? Ortega said. ?Firstly, a better cardio-respiratory fitness level should be considered from now on as a characteristic of this subset of metabolically healthy obese people. Secondly, once fitness is accounted for, our study shows for the first time that metabolically healthy but obese individuals have similar prognosis as metabolically healthy normal-weight individuals, and a better prognosis than their obese peers with an abnormal metabolic profile.?

The researchers suggested that physicians should pay closer attention to body fat percentage and fitness levels when assessing a patients risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer.

?It is possible to be fat and fit ? but relatively few people are,? Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, told HealthDay. He was not part of the study.

?It is certainly possible to be thin and unhealthy, which is why health, not a particular weight, is what we should be aiming for as both individuals and a society,? he said.

Amy Thompson, a senior cardiac nurse with the British Heart Foundation, added to the BBC that it?s important to remember that for the majority of people obesity is an ?undeniable risk factor? for coronary heart disease. Keeping tabs on your body mass index and measuring your waist while maintaining a healthy diet and fitness regiment are some ways to help keep your risk lower.

?It is particularly important to be aware of your weight if you are carrying excess fat around your middle,? she said. ?The fat cells here are really active, producing toxic substances that cause damage which can lead to heart disease.?

In America we have a cockroach which when looked at looks exactly like an all American cockroach but give it a close eye and you will find a yellow margin on the thorax with yellow streaks at its sides near the wing base. It is very difficult to tell the many species of cockroaches apart but the Australian cockroach is one of the first ones on the list due to its unique preference of wanting a warmer climate, the Australian cockroach is a cosmopolitan species. This little insect is extremely fast, able to dart in and out of rooms without anyone ever noticing. It fits into some of the tiniest crack despite its large size. On Vulcan's list of pest and problems the Australian cockroach shows up in hot environments and especially baths.

    Where do they hide?

Have you ever walked into a steamy bathroom or most likely, out of one? The Australian cockroach love this environment because it's warm everywhere. The bathroom is the number one place you can find that this particular cockroach is breeding. How can you prevent this cockroach?

    - Try taking cold showers - Stop being in a comfortably warm environment - Don't cook - Stop having a bed - Don't turn on the heater - Turn off your refrigerator coils - Insulate your garage and remove its garage door

If you looked at this and laughed, it's because we do these things normally everyday and we can't possibly see ourselves not doing it or doing without. The cockroach has numerous ways of surviving in the face of what seems like an easy way to kill it. Despite being called the Australian Cockroach, the cockroach itself does not originate from Australia. In fact, it was introduced to Australia and now it seems this bug will never have an end to it because Australia has everything it could ever hope for. It's hot, humid and rainy most of the year causing the heat to never fade. In America, we have them sporadic throughout the states unable to extinguish their existence.

This is where the professionals at Vulcan Termite and Pest Control come in; while they may not be able to rid the world of the bug itself they can protect your house day in and day out by adding layers of security in your home to protect from these bugs. They will come in and exterminate the problem before it's too late; reaching those corners you would probably never think of.

The way this bug is handled is your house is inspected and then it's tented to prevent any toxic gas leaving the house. After this you're completely roach free and you can eat that sandwich without wondering what might be in it when you weren't looking. With the extra layers of protection, there is no worry that these bugs will ever come back making sure that the problem is always in check every 30 days and on-site calling.

Buyers Interest in Condos Gets Renewed | Market Insider ...

Buyer?s Interest in Condos Gets RenewedIt?s not just the single detached family homes that are experiencing a revival in the real estate industry but also the condo units in Florida especially in the Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach areas. ??The areas that were hit hardest by the real estate turmoil are now the areas that are first showing the signs of recovery.

The current condition of the real estate market for condominiums can be likened during the middle of 2000 before the real estate market crashed and left these housing units empty. The need to build newer units is rising in order to attract foreign buyers to these coastal areas of Florida and some of these are ex pats are from Canada, Russia and even South America.

The recovery of the housing sector for condo units are being? done by these nationals as most pay largely by cash although Americans are not able to participate in this process due to lack of funds or stricter rules when applying for a housing loan.

Real estate in Cape Coral for single homes and condos are also experiencing recovery as prices have increased to 15.9% last month based on last year?s data.? The asking prices of properties are higher compared to the actual market values which is also an indicator of the market?s steady recovery.

Other areas where interests in buying condos are getting rekindled are Phoenix AZ and Las Vegas NV.? In Phoenix, there is a reported? 21.6% increase in prices based from the previous year?s numbers.? The reason for the rise is buyers who are hunting for the best property bargains especially low priced foreclosed units.?? The city is considered as one of the cities with the biggest reported recovery in its housing sector.

Another reason why both cities have recovered well is due to the lack of extra inventories in which both areas are able to manage the demand for these units. Yet experts are concerned for the recovery of the housing market in Florida due to the upcoming foreclosures of the state.? This city has become notorious for having a tedious foreclosure process than in any other state.? Unlike other states, the foreclosure process in Florida has to undergo through the courts and currently still tackling around 371,000 cases that are backlogged.

Condominium developer depend on buyers making cash payments to fund most of the constructions costs for these units and this makes up 80% of the selling prices of most units in the market.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's convention evolution is complete

Eight years ago, Obama rocketed into the political spotlight with a soaring convention keynote address. Four years later, he accepted the Democratic Party's nomination and became their standard bearer.

On Thursday, Obama took the convention stage fighting for his job.

"I recognize that times have changed since I first spoke to this convention," Obama said. "The times have changed, and so have I."

"I'm no longer just a candidate. I'm the president," he said, drawing cheers from the crowd of 15,000.

Obama urged voters to stay patient even though his economic policies have failed to fully fix the American economy. Once the candidate of hope, Obama's message was hang in there.

"America, I never said this journey would be easy, and I won't promise that now," he said, "Yes, our path is harder - but it leads to a better place. Yes our road is longer, but we travel it together."

In 2008, Obama ran for office on a platform of lofty ideas, many of which have gone unfulfilled during his years in the White House. This time around, Obama acknowledged that the campaign sometimes seems small, even silly.

"Trivial things become big distractions. Serious issues become sound bites," he said. "And the truth gets buried under an avalanche of money and advertising."

Gone was the newness of his two prior convention appearances. And Obama, the graying incumbent, didn't try to recreate it.

Instead, he whittled the election down to a choice, spelling out his vision of how to create economic opportunity for all, and warning that Romney would restore trickle-down ideas that Obama says were quietly gutting the economy for years before crashing it completely.

Gone, too, was the setting Obama wanted for the biggest address of his re-election bid.

Democrats opted for their convention's rented basketball arena instead of a much larger, open-air football stadium for Obama, wary of the safety and political risks if rain came pouring down.

"We can't let a little thunder and lightning get us down. We're going to have to roll with it," Obama said in a phone call earlier Thursday to supporters who lost their chance to attend because of the site switch.

In a nation in which more than 23 million people are unemployed or underemployed, Obama e on the millions who have found work, and how many more can, too. He talked of education and energy and innovation and job training.

    He asked for more time.

He had help with that request this week. As former President Bill Clinton put it on Wednesday: "No president ? not me, not any of my predecessors ? no one could have fully repaired all the damage that he found in just four years. But he has laid the foundations for a new, modern, successful economy of shared prosperity. And if you will renew the president's contract, you will feel it."

Obama walked off the stage following his speech along with wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha.

The next time he steps on the convention stage will be as outgoing president.

30 Years of Family ElderCare at the Kodosky Lounge | Out & About

    Austin360 blogs > Out & About > Archives > 2012 > September > 07 > Entry

Aging might be life?s biggest surprise. Even if we prepare for it, the reality shocks us. And virtually no one is ready to ask for help when the time comes.

    care1.jpg

    Ashley Lassberg and Edward Flores

For 30 years, Family ElderCare has provided that help, scaled by staff and volunteers to financial capacity of the clients. Backers joined the caregivers and clients for an anniversary salute on Thursday at the Kodosky Lounge. The view of the park, river and skyline from the donor room at the Long Center provided the right visual reminder for the 100 or so quiet revelers of all the changes in Austin the past 30 years.

    care2.jpg

    Angela Atwood and Grova Jones

Two groups of photographs stood on easels. One set were dignified, gray portraits of the elderly, part of a judged contest called ?The Changing Face of Central Texas.? The other consisted of Sarah Wilson?s sensitive color portraits of ElderCare clients ? some playful, some resigned ? in their own homes. These will hang on the walls of the nonprofit?s new quarters.

    care3.jpg

    Jim Spencer and Carrie Rodriguez

Director Angela Lassberg rose to honor leader Cheryl George, volunteer Ellis ?Pat? Craig and community champion Jim Spencer, the face and voice of Family ElderCare?s annual fan drive, which has kept Central Texans from heat harm. Spencer compared our deaths in the recent heat wave (0) to those in the Midwest (more than 80).

I know and admire Lassberg and Spencer. As for Craig, the story of his 18-year guardianship of a particular client is destined to feed an Out & About column some day soon.

New coach Jon Kitna is committed to returning the Lincoln Abes to the kind of football prominence they ? and he ? enjoyed years ago

Fans call it ?taking a knee.? The football game is won and done, but there?s some time to kill before the issue can be closed. So the ball is snapped to the quarterback with a simple task: put a knee to the ground.

Jon Kitna, a veteran of 15 pro football seasons who?s beginning the first year of the rest of his life as the head coach at Lincoln High School, is familiar with all that can go wrong when a game is seemingly won and done.

?Let?s go over our victory formation, men,? Kitna says to his team. It?s a Saturday afternoon, a few minutes before two school buses will take the Abes to Sumner for their game against Bonney Lake High School.

Taking a knee, like every other play in football, is not as simple as it looks. Offensive linemen must be precisely spaced. A tailback, whose sole responsibility will be to pounce on a botched snap, is placed behind the quarterback. What can go wrong?

?Don?t be surprised if the other guys cheap-shot you, or talk some smack,? Kitna warns. ?They?re tired. They?re frustrated. They?re angry. They?ve just lost the game, and they?re upset.

?If that happens, you turn the other way. Got it? You turn the other way. You just smile to yourself ?cause your team has won.?

Watch for the cue from the sideline, Kitna goes on. The coaches will implement it by holding their second and third fingers aloft, football sign-language for the letter ?V,? which stands for victory.

In front of the school, the Lincoln victory formation is practiced a final time. Quarterback J?Maka Love catches the shotgun snap and puts his knee to the ground.

Last January, when Kitna was hired at Lincoln to teach math and coach the football team, he noted how there?s ?greatness in the hallways? of the 99-year-old school. Tapping that greatness will require Kitna?s athletes to honor every small detail, whether it?s turning in homework assignments on schedule or taking a knee at the end of a game.

Greatness in the Lincoln High School hallways can be attained without its football team winning every weekend, of course. Lining up in a victory formation nine or 10 times a season won?t hurt the cause.

Before the enchanted evening is over, under a full moon, Lincoln will line up in a victory formation that precedes a poignant reunion of former Abes teammates in the locker room.

How the reunion becomes a happy occasion, well, that is the stuff of a story.

    SUNDAY, AUG. 26

Six days before the 2012 season kicks off, Kitna is putting together the Abes? traveling squad and first-week game plan with five assistant coaches. They gather in the upstairs office of Kitna?s Lakewood residence, an elegant but comfortable house filled with the joyous noise of children at play.

The office door remains open. It?s as if Kitna doesn?t hear the kids. Then again, maybe he does, and likes the sound.

A miniature Seahawks jersey, with Kitna?s name stitched on the back, hangs in a frame, and there are some other sports mementos, but the office ? and, for that matter, the house ? is not a shrine to its owner?s athletic accomplishments.

The Lincoln alum knows where he came from (the East Side of Tacoma) and what he did after he left (the undrafted free-agent quarterback from Central Washington University played 15 seasons in the NFL, passing for 169 touchdowns and almost 30,000 yards). He doesn?t need memorabilia to remind him of a career that concluded last winter.

Besides, while Kitna?s years with the Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys were satisfying and lucrative, they won?t mean squat against Bonney Lake.

And yet one aspect of that NFL experience serves as a framework for Kitna?s Lincoln program.

?What will separate us,? he tells the assistants, ?is our efficiency in practice.?

Efficiency means every sequence of a two-hour practice is scripted to the minute. Practice time is precious. Practice time will not be compromised by small talk. It?s a Jon Kitna mandate that even extends to this coaches meeting in his office, where the mood of urgency is akin to a Joint Chiefs of Staff conference at the White House.

The assembling of Lincoln?s traveling roster begins by establishing a tentative depth chart at every position. Kitna marks down the names on an erasable poster board; consensus is achieved by identifying 19 offensive players and 21 defensive players.

?We want to take 60 guys,? Kitna says. ?So we need another 20 who deserve to go. Ideas??

Ideas, at first, come fast and furious. Assistant head coach Evan Brady, defensive coordinator Casey Kjos, offensive coordinator Damola Adeniji, defensive backs coach Eric Boles and offensive line coach Matt Kitna ? Jon?s brother ? volunteer names for consideration.

The vetting process is earnest. Candidates are judged on their practice attitude, their potential to contribute in a pinch and their appetite for contact ? a key component for those on special teams.

?I don?t want 11 starters on the kickoff team,? Boles says, ?because somebody?s gonna get hurt. But then, I got bad memories of the kickoff team. That?s where I got hurt.?

The search moves on: Who plays? Who travels? Who stays????? ?

?Martinez deserves to make the trip? somebody says.

    ?Which one is Martinez??

?He?s got the double knee brace.?

?No, that?s Marquez,? Jon Kitna corrects. ?Martinez stands up to about here? ? the 6-foot-2 Kitna gestures toward his rib-cage ? ?and gives everything he?s got, every day he?s out there.

?We need some more names,? Kitna says. Fast and furious has slowed to a crawl. Brady spins around in his swiveling chair, takes a deep breath, and stares at the ceiling. If you think high-school traveling squads are put together on a whim, ask Brady about how whimsical it is.

He looks like a contestant on the ?Who Wants to be a Millionaire? game show. Without a lifeline.? ?

After several minutes of consternation, a traveling squad finally is set for the season opener. It will include Ricky Marquez, a 5-10, 170-pound sophomore, and Julio-Caesar Martinez, the 5-6, 135-pound junior who gives everything he?s got, every day he?s out there.

Once the traveling roster is established, Kitna and his staff devise a game plan for Bonney Lake. The head coach scribbles ?keys to winning? on the poster board. On defense, it?s predicated on eliminating the two outside receivers and pressuring the quarterback. On offense, it?s predicated on keeping turnovers to a minimum.

    As in, none.

?How is that going to happen?? Kitna asks the coaches, and then he volunteers a thought.

?If it?s third-and-15, we?ll get the ball to the side on a screen pass. We don?t have to throw deep. They have no idea we have so many screens.?

Kitna has an affinity for old-school values. He wants his players to regard teammates as family members, and to regard opponents with respect.

But old-school values don?t have to put a crimp on the new-wave football strategy of accelerated tempo. The Abes will practice fast to play fast.

?If we get these guys in shape, they?re gonna be unstoppable,? he says, and then, savoring the words, he repeats himself: ?They?re gonna be unstoppable.?

Having agreed upon the offensive, defensive and special teams? rotations, the coaches figure out game-day logistics: There will be room for two of them in the upstairs box ? who goes there? There will be six headsets ? who wears them?

The idea is for one coach to send authentic plays in from the sideline, while another coach stands next to him, pretending to send in plays. The decoy will prevent sign-stealing.

?Does that really happen at this level?? Kitna is asked.

    He?s taking no chances.

Their work done for the day, the staff adjourns to a restaurant, where the epic mission of restoring greatness in the Lincoln hallways presumably will be tabled for a few minutes of small talk. A busy week that could define their 2012 season awaits them, and they?re hungry.

    WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29

The Abes? third game-week practice in preparation for Bonney Lake begins the moment the girls? soccer team leaves the Lincoln Bowl field.

?Offense, let?s go!? Kitna shouts. The players, who have been waiting behind the goal post, approach their positions in a trudge that suggests they are not particularly enthusiastic about the task at hand ? or tasks in general.

?C?mon, men, have some of pep in your step!? he says. Conquering laziness on this particular afternoon is a prominent theme.

Drills proceed within a precise timetable. It?s all business; only during the stretching exercises does Kitna share a smile. ?

?What are you doing over there?? he asks a lineman, sitting on the sideline bench.

    ?My hamstring hurts, coach.?

?Dude, you?re not fast enough to have a hamstring injury.?

At the conclusion of stretching, the Abes participate in their daily ?R.E.A.L. Men? chant. R.E.A.L. is an acronym for Kitna?s vision of molding the typical Lincoln football player into somebody who rejects passivity (R), empathizes with others (E), accepts responsibility (A) and leads courageously (L).

Kitna?s long-term vision for Lincoln is one of clarity, unimpeded by the frequent mistakes he sees his team commit on the practice field.

?You hit him right in the back!? Kitna screams during a punt-return drill. It?s possible the coach?s voice can be heard at the Flying Boots cafe, two blocks away.

?Why would you do that? WHY??

?You better know it. You better know it,? Kitna implores to another player, who has forgotten where to line up. ?We can?t play you unless you know what you?re doing.?

Kitna, who turns 40 on Sept. 21, is a hands-on coach whose hands today will be on the football. He wants to acclimate the defense to the quick-strike passing attack it?ll face Saturday night against the Panthers.

As a backup to Dallas quarterback Tony Romo last season, Kitna attempted only 10 passes over three games. But 15-year NFL veterans don?t lose their skills overnight. Kitna is throwing tight spirals released with ease, and though every ball isn?t caught, every ball ? short, medium or deep ? is catchable.????? ?

Midway through practice, Lincoln principal Pat Erwin makes a brief appearance.

?Jon impressed me the first time we talked about the coaching job here,? says Erwin. ?He knew exactly what he wanted to do: build character with his ?R.E.A.L. Men? program. He was convinced football could be way of turning young people into better individuals.

?Then he gave a thorough description of his plans for an offensive system, and for a defensive system. He had it all written out. There was no question in my mind that Jon Kitna would be just as successful a high-school coach as he was as a player.?

(?Pat Erwin is the man,? Kitna will tell his assistants later. ?He?s agreed to waive the freshman P.E. requirement for football players so they can use the period for weight training. That?s huge.?)? ?

After practice, Kitna gathers in front of the team for a pep talk delivered in the cadence of a Sunday morning sermon.

?Don?t mistake passion,? he stresses, ?for a lack of love. We care about you. But you?ve got to get rid of laziness. Laziness is inside all of us, and how do you confront it? You kick it to the curb. You don?t feel like doing your homework because you?re lazy? Kick it. You don?t feel like waking up early and going to work because you?re lazy? Kick it, kick it, kick it.

?Men, do you know what the difference is between the people who make it in this world and the people who don?t? The people who make it see an obstacle and look past it. Whatever the obstacle is, they look past it and get to where they want to go.?

Kitna ends his lecture by accentuating the positive.

?I can?t wait to watch us on Saturday,? he says. ?I?m so excited, I can?t sleep. They?re a good team with a good quarterback, and he?s gonna come out fast. But you?ll see nothing as fast as what you saw today. Bonney Lake has no idea what is coming.?

Once the players are off the field, Kitna holds a 15-minute debriefing session with the assistant coaches and a trusted observer, former Lincoln basketball coach John McCrossin.

?You?ve got some athletes, I can tell that much,? McCrossin tells his former pupil. ?Now they?ve just got to embrace the message they?re getting.?

Kitna shares a thought with the group.

?You know what we need? We need two guys who are so competitive at practice that we can?t allow them near each other. When I was playing here, Jon Kitna and Lawyer Malloy couldn?t practice against each other because it was going to get out of hand.

?We?ve got to find that spark, that fire, that energy.?

As Kitna waits for practices to be self-energized by the sparks, fire and energy of ferocious competitors, former Abes quarterback Quintin Brown, class of 2010, watches this practice with an excitement dampened by regret.

?It?s so organized now, it?s like night and day,? says Brown, who helps record video for the team. ?It?s a shame I wasn?t born five years later.?

    SATURDAY, SEPT. 1

The Abes? pregame team meal in the Lincoln cafeteria is a family affair. Jon?s father, Martin, grilled 90 hamburgers at home. Jon?s wife, Jennifer, carved melon for the fruit trays. Jon?s mom, Fay, is supervising a serving line that includes his cousin and some Kitna family friends.

    And Jon?

Three and a half hours removed from watching a kickoff he has been anticipating since January, the rookie coach is involved in a different kind of game day ? one in which he?ll be absent from action, and yet in the middle of everything.

?It?s almost more stressful than when he played,? says Jennifer Kitna, as the Abes amble through the food line in single file. She smiles and adds: ?I thought this was going to be better.?

?See those guys?? says Martin Kitna, nodding toward the coaches at the cafeteria entrance. ?They?ve already got their game faces on.?

Jon Kitna might be a novice at this gig, but he understands there?s a time for reflection and a time for levity. The Abes? pregame meal will include both.

He leads the team in a prayer of thanks for the food and those responsible for preparing it. After the meal, he asks the seniors to step up to the microphone and describe something that has stuck with them since Aug. 15, when the Abes convened for their first practice.

One rule: Each player must offer an original thought. Nobody can be repeated.

It?s supposed to be fun, but the motive behind the extemporaneous ?drill? is serious. Addressing an audience ? even an audience of teammates who have become an extended family ? can be a challenge. Kitna wants the seniors to think on their feet and assert themselves as they speak.

?My favorite thing,? says Isaiah McClarron, ?is how fast we picked up the speed of the game.?

?What I like,? says QueVeon Jenkins, ?is all the respect we?ve shared with other.?

?I just want everyone to be proud,? says Isaac Fua.

When a comment is inaudible, Kitna sounds less like the football coach than director of the school?s next theatrical production: ?Louder! Be confident!?

?Probably the best thing I can think of,? says Lu Alainuuese, ?is ... the food.?

Alainuuese?s words draw the intended roar of laughter, with the head coach laughing the hardest. There will be a place and time for a pregame speech, but it is not here, and it is not now.

Between the meal and the final walk-through in front of the school, players put on their game jerseys and pack the rest of their uniform gear in bags they?ll carry on the bus. Kitna stays busy entertaining his two youngest children, Jalen (9) and Jameson (6), in the equipment room.

Banter in the coaches? office, meanwhile, is quite a bit more lighthearted than it was when they were installing the game plan at Kitna?s house.?? ?

The buses show up for the trip to Sumner?s Sunset Chev Stadium. And 30 minutes later, the Abes are gathering in the visitor?s locker room ? it?s more like a staging room, there are no lockers ? where a Phil Collins song is blaring.

?I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord.

And I?ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord.

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord??

It?s cramped and stuffy as the players strap on their pads, but the booming drumbeat of the music turns a mood of urgent tension into something close to euphoria.

    ?I?ve been waiting for

this moment all my life, oh Lord ... ?

?For anybody who wants to say a prayer,? the head coach announces, ?we?re going outside.?

Kitna asks the Heavenly Father for a good, clean game that spares either team of injuries. The non-denominational acknowledgment of a divine creator, bereft of references to winning or losing, is similar to the brief prayer at the pregame meal: It?s about giving thanks. It?s about celebrating the spirit of competition.

As for the variables of competition an omnipotent deity presumably leaves up to the athletes, Kitna, back in the locker room, faces his team.

?Listen up. Give me your eyes,? he says. ?Football is an emotional, passionate game. You have to play with emotion and passion somewhere inside of you. But emotion doesn?t win football games, and passion doesn?t win football games.

?Just do your job. Do what you?ve prepared to do, and the rest will take care of itself. There will be some adversity, trust me, because it?s football. If something goes wrong, don?t mope about it. It?s done. Move on to the next play.

?So have fun and cut it loose. Let?s show them what a family looks like.?

Pregame warm-up drills find two quarterbacks taking snaps for the Abes. There?s J?Maka Love, a junior recently converted from a wide receiver, and Jordan Kitna, Jon?s son. Only a ninth-grader, Jordan throws a football as if he were born to do it. The plan had been for Jordan to start. ?

But as a student whose Lakewood residency is outside Lincoln?s boundary, Jordan?s eligibility status was put up for administrative review. The West Central District ruled Jordan can?t play for the varsity this season (his appeal was heard Thursday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association; a result is expected within five days).

So tonight the offense will be in the hands of Love, a spectacularly elusive 5-11, 182-pound junior who takes the ball and runs with it, who throws it with touch and accuracy, and all in all, comports himself as the Abes? version of Robert Griffin III.

Lincoln appears to surrender a first-quarter touchdown before defensive back Oliver Orr scoops up a fumble at the goal line and returns it 70 yards. Moments later, Love finds junior receiver Kashawn Johnson in the corner of the end zone, and when Dionte Simon runs for a 3-yard score after another fumble recovery, the Abes are up 14-0 in the first quarter.? ?

But despite dodging pressure augmented by a constant blitz, Bonney Lake senior quarterback Chris Brown is a handful. He hooks up with Zach Zaragoza on a 63-yard touchdown pass, then takes advantage of a botched coverage assignment in the final minute of the first half by throwing a 30-yard touchdown to Kaleb Zahnow.

It?s 14-14 at halftime. Kitna?s prediction about adversity is turning out to be spot-on, and there?s more of it to come.

When the Panthers? Ethan McElderry runs for a 14-yard touchdown in the third quarter, that early 14-point lead Lincoln had is now a six-point deficit.

On the visitor?s sideline, a Lincoln football legend is offering encouragement.

?I see progress,? Lawyer Milloy says during a timeout. ?And progress comes one step at a time.?

Lincoln?s faster steps prove pivotal in the fourth quarter, when Love hooks up with Joshua Eckwood for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Eckwood?s leaping grab is lights-out magnificent, a play rivaled only by Love?s 39-yard touchdown scramble on the Abes? ensuing possession.

It should be over, except no game is over on a field populated by teenagers. Bonney Lake scores another touchdown on a last-gasp 34-yard touchdown pass, giving the Panthers, down 34-27, reason to believe in a comeback hinging on an onside kick.

Lincoln recovers the kick, and runs a few plays before it?s time to line up in the victory formation. The coaches signal ?V? from the sideline. Two fingers, remember? ?

But there?s confusion ? it?s been that kind of night, with pre-snap flags flying everywhere ? and Kitna shouts for a timeout.

With the clock showing 40.5 seconds to go, the victory formation finally is executed.

After the perfunctory handshake procession with the Bonney Lake players, the Abes jog toward the visitor?s bleachers for a more rousing round of high fives.

Amid the locker room afterglow, Kitna congratulates his team before pointing out that Lincoln?s most formidable opponent was Lincoln.

?We could?ve won this game, 75-14,? he says. ?They never stopped us on offense. Where?s J?Maka Love? Come on over here.

    ?J?Maka Love saved us tonight.?

There?s another face in the crowd worthy of mention.

?Lincoln High school will be 100 years old next year,? says Kitna, ?and no greater athlete ever walked its hallways than the man I?m about to introduce to you. His name is Lawyer Milloy.?

?I?m so proud of you guys,? Milloy tells the team. ?I had a chance to go to (the) Huskies? game tonight, or see you guys. I couldn?t miss this.?

Milloy, who parlayed his stellar career at Lincoln High into a scholarship at the University of Washington, talks about growing up in a gang-infested neighborhood dominated by the Crips and Bloods. He pledged allegiance to neither, and ended up with a bunch of guys remembered as the world-champion New England Patriots.

?The secret to success is practice,? continues Milloy. ?The reason I was able to last 15 years in the NFL is because I practiced just as hard as I played.?

There?s greatness lurking in the hallways at Lincoln. Lawyer Milloy knows it. So does Jon Kitna, whose job of nurturing that greatness figures to be easier once he doesn?t have to call time out before the victory formation.
