Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition due update to Android 4.3 in July?

Buyers of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the first to get their hands on the forthcoming, unseen 4.3 version of Android, rumours suggest, once again highlighting one of the chief reasons to buy a vanilla Android phone.

According to sources cited by Sam Mobile, the software update for the phone, which only went on sale at Google Play in the US this week and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, will land next month.

The 4.3 iteration of Android is another take on Jelly Bean. This much we think we know. But while that means it won?t be a major overhaul (that?ll surely come with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie), we?re still anticipating that it?ll bring with it a fair old tranche of new features.

Aimed principally at developers, the Galaxy S4 Google edition features Android as the search giant originally intended. That means it?s free of Samsung?s customisations, such as the Smart Pause intelligent pause mode, which some tech fans feel are overly fussy and gimmicky.

This was highlighted by a uSwitch consumer poll in which over 70 per cent of respondents said they would rather own Google?s vanilla Android Galaxy S4 than the standard Samsung model adorned with Nature UX interface.

Supreme Court 2013: The Year in Review

Deng Linlin of China performs on the beam during the women's individual all-around final of the Gymnastics World Championships. Could we come up with a kind of Justice Report Card using a metric with multiple scores, like the one gymnasts or ice skaters receive?

I love your list, Eric. I?ve been thinking, too, about the questions you raised at the outset of this discussion, when you said we have no baseline for assessing the work of Supreme Court justices other than how the results fit with our ideological preferences. Opinions are like silky dresses (or maybe a pair of dapper dress shoes is a better metaphor for this group): If they flatter us and make us feel better about the world we live in, we are sold. If not, we either rip them to shreds or relegate them to the back of the closet.

Walter says law matters more than Eric?s critique suggests: It has a seat on the bench next to ideology. As a judge who actually grapples with this question, says that it?s inevitable for judges to inject emotion and practical concerns, and that great judges ?have been frank in their opinions about these sources of their judicial votes.? Also, they have evidence to support the moves they make.

Could we then come up with a kind of Justice Report Card? I?m thinking of a metric with multiple scores, like the one gymnasts or ice skaters receive. We could score justices and their opinions for quality of evidence, candor, degree of difficulty, logic, adherence to past precedent, consistency with their own stated philosophies, plausibility of statutory construction, and style (argle-bargle!). I?m just brainstorming?surely one could all refine these categories. (And I bet someone already has. Readers, send me examples?)

The hardest boxes of the report card to grade, though, would be two I?ve left out so far: fidelity to the Constitution, and a ruling?s practical effect. Those two scores might be at once the most subjective and the most significant. They depend on how we each see American history and law, and a gut check. Gay marriage is either a social good to be celebrated or a threat.

I?m OK with the subjective nature of the Justice Report Card, because of course judging is a mix of law and politics. The point of scoring various categories would be to show how much law and how much politics come into play in a given opinion, or a particular justice?s record. The more contested the case, the more likely that ideology will play a role. That?s why it matters so much who the president is when seats on the high court or the lower ones must be filled. Judging isn?t lawless; it?s also not law-only. I am despondent about the court?s ruling about the Voting Rights Act because I think it will harm the interests of black and Hispanic voters. I am furious about it because Chief Justice Roberts? opinion was shot through with holes. The opinion I?d rate the highest this week was Justice Ginsburg?s dissent on the Voting Rights Act, because she thoroughly exposed the majority opinion?s weaknesses, hanging it up like a torn garment for all to see. And she also taught me a great deal about a subject I thought I understood.

Which brings me to two things for which I give thanks. The first is the existence of these opinions we?ve been dissecting. Judges (especially when they are deciding an appeal) have to write down their reasons. It?s a test of candor, or at least transparency, that the job imposes. This is perhaps the best quality of the third branch, the one that?s at the root of its legitimacy.

My second thanks goes to all of you, also for teaching me so much this week. I feel like the novice marathoner who somehow got to go for a run with some of the world?s great athletes. Thank you for letting me pant alongside you.

EV Grieve: A case against using the term 'crusty'

[At a recent Thursday night PBJ Dinner in Tompkins Square Park]

Andr?a Stella, executive director and co-founder of The Space at Tompkins, submitted the following post.

With the summer in full swing, a lot of our clients are coming back to New York, and we wanted to take a moment to give an explanation for a term that has been and will inevitably be thrown around while they're here.

Three reasons why we don't call our clients "crusties"

1) The term "crusty" is derived from "Crust Punk," a punk movement started in the 1980s out of England with followers who referred to themselves as "crust punkers." Being a "crusty" is like calling someone a Deadhead. 99% of our clients do not refer to themselves as crusties, so we don't either. The term gets thrown around a lot in the East Village because it's a quick way to define a group of folks who look a certain way, but that doesn't make it accurate.

2) When asked, "What do you consider yourself?" ? almost everyone told us their name. The first time I asked someone that question, I felt like an idiot because I know that personally, I don't walk around introducing myself as, "Hi, I identify as a white female and my name is Andr?a." I start with my name.

3) Our clients are individuals, and most of them are trying to transition out of their current situation. It may not always look like it to outsiders, but there are many complex issues right under the surface that each person copes with in their own way. Tagging someone as "crusty" deepens the stigma and does not promote positive change.

We're The Space at Tompkins, a harm reduction organization whose mission is to help homeless travelers move towards improved health and self-sufficiency. We've been doing this since 2009.

GamePop Mini: A 'Free' Android Game Console + Subscription

Silicon Valley-based mobile software company BlueStacks has been getting quite some attention (including from us) for its yet-to-be launched GamePop console + monthly subscription that will supposedly enable people to play a host of popular Android and iOS games on their TVs.

Today, the company is presenting a new offering, dubbed the GamePop Mini, which will essentially be a smaller, nimbler version of the console that will be gratis (compared to $129 for the regular GamePop console).

GamePop Mini is thus essentially free hardware, but it will come with a subscription for games priced $6.99 per month.

It?s impossible to report this news without pointing out that the Wall Street Journal yesterday revealed that Google is working on an Android gaming console of its own. If that report checks out and said console makes it to market, it will remain to be seen whether fledgling rivals like BlueStacks or OUYA stand a chance. What do you think?

(Story continues after this quick poll)

Like its big brother, the new, leaner GamePop device (see render in featured image above) will run Jelly Bean 4.2, connect to a TV via a supplied HDMI cable and include a curated group of 500 mobile game partners, including HalfBrick (Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride), Glu (Blood Brothers) and kids app developer Intellijoy.

As for the differences: we understand that GamePop proper will have a ?nicer form factor, fit and finish?, boast a faster chipset, more peripherals and be ?more expandable?. If that will be enough to warrant a $129 price difference remains to be seen.

The GamePop Mini can be ?purchased? from Monday via the product website. The regular GamePop can also be ordered for free (as a launch promotion) through Sunday night.

BlueStacks CEO, Rosen Sharma, comments:

We have always planned on having a free console option. The biggest value of the GamePop service is its content ? not the box.

Hardware costs have come down so fast that we?re able to undercut the rest of the market.

With the free promotion we?ve been doing in June we?re already seeing a ton of adoption. That volume then attracts more developers and therefore more and better content. It?s building momentum.

The company is not disclosing how many pre-orders of the GamePop console it has seen to date, only saying that ?they are stronger than expected?. Both GamePop consoles are slated to ship this winter.

Up until now, BlueStacks was best known for its App Player software, which now caters to 10 million users who want to play their favorite mobile games on a Mac or PC desktop computer.

BlueStacks is backed by the likes of Andreessen Horowitz, Qualcomm Ventures, Citrix Systems and Intel Capital. BlueStacks also raised funding from Austin-based AMD, makers of the new chips for the Xbox One and PS4 consoles and one of its strategic partners.

Cassidy: NSA muzzle should be removed from Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo

The NSA spying scandal and the way it runs through Silicon Valley "is the story that just won't go away," to borrow a phrase from Fox News.

Details -- some accurate, some not -- of the government's snooping continue to trickle out. Many of us continue to wonder just what the government has scooped up about us from our go-to social networking and search companies like Google (GOOG), Facebook, Yahoo (YHOO) and Apple (AAPL). And some of us wonder just what those companies have done to try to protect our privacy

It's the last question that has become my personal obsession. The feds and the commercial keepers of the Internet have said all the right things to make us feel better. When several news outlets were reporting that the NSA through a program called Prism was tapping directly into the servers of search engines and social media sites, executives said that was not the case. The NSA explained

that it was only targeting foreign suspects and only with the authorization of a top-secret court.

But does any of that put you at ease? Me neither.

There is something that could help us all feel better about the oceans of personal data that are sloshing around out there: National security officials should free companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Yahoo to explain what is going on in much greater detail. After all, we are their customers. We put our trust in them. They have benefited greatly from using our data to target ads and develop marketing schemes. They know more about us than we know about ourselves.

All this was on my mind recently when I attended a New York Times global forum. This one, hosted by columnist Thomas Friedman, centered on the notion that we'd moved from being a connected society to a hyper-connected one and that the transformation has changed everything from business to security to philanthropy to education to relationships.

The spin was generally positive, but obviously this increased connectivity has some serious down sides.

Among the many speakers was Dov Seidman, CEO of corporate advisory firm LRN and a guy who's become a guru of good corporate behavior. He seemed a

An illustration picture shows the logo of the U.S. National Security Agency on the display of an iPhone in Berlin, June 7, 2013. REUTERS/Pawel Kopczynski (PAWEL KOPCZYNSKI)

logical one to ask about the role of valley companies in the NSA drama.

"At the end of the day," Seidman, whose outfit works with Fortune 500 companies globally, told me, "the Silicon Valley companies that are capturing a lot of data are in a very precarious and a very rich relationship with their (customers). Their currency is trust and if they do anything to betray that trust, it's going to be hard to regain it."

No kidding. The problem is that it's going to be hard for Silicon Valley companies to maintain or regain that trust if the federal government continues to muzzle them.

Part of Seidman's gospel is that the world has become a place where what companies do is important, but more important is how they do things. The explosion of social media and the ability to immediately and broadly call out bad corporate behavior, means that companies that act unethically or otherwise mistreat customers, partners, suppliers and others will have a hard time getting away with it.

Few things matter more to people than their personal information, said Seidman, author of "How: Why How We Do Anything Means Everything." "So these are the crown jewels that these companies are possessing," he said. "They've got to handle them with great care."

How have they done? Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft and others have pushed back, asking the feds to let them disclose more details about government demands for information and corporate responses to those demands. But the feds have provided little useful relief.

No question it would be good to get a good accounting. I'd also be interested in knowing what search and social media companies did when the NSA first came calling. The week the NSA news broke, I wrote a blog post wondering whether Silicon Valley companies stood up for our privacy. Did they go to court to fight the orders to turn over data? Did they use their considerable connections in Congress? It would be fair to say the post was critical and assumed the worst.

But now comes news that at least one company in 2008 fought a request made under the law that governs the Prism program. The legal battle was fought secretly and to this day the court hasn't disclosed the name of the company, although The New York Times reported that it was Yahoo.

That is exactly the sort of information that the feds should allow companies to disclose. There is no need to keep the targeted company secret five years later. If they ever doubted it, terrorists now know that investigators monitor U.S. Internet companies; and they know Yahoo is a U.S. Internet company. That Yahoo fought a surveillance order would tell those who mean us harm nothing they don't already know.

But it would tell consumers a lot. For instance, if Yahoo fought the feds prying through Prism and Google didn't (something we can't know for sure) a reasonable consumer might want to shift from Google to Yahoo for search, or from Gmail to Yahoo Mail for correspondence.

At the very least, a reasonable consumer would want to know the track record of the two companies in order to make an informed decision.

Vatican monsignor arrested in 20M euro plot

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? A Vatican cleric and two other people were arrested Friday by Italian police for allegedly trying to smuggle 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into the country from Switzerland by private jet. It's the latest scandal to hit the Holy See and broadens an Italian probe into its secretive bank.

Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, already under investigation in a purported money-laundering plot involving the Vatican bank, is accused of corruption and slander and was being held at a Rome prison, prosecutor Nello Rossi told reporters.

Scarano's arrest came just two days after Pope Francis created a commission of inquiry into the Vatican bank to get to the bottom of the problems that have plagued it for decades and contributed to the impression that it's an unregulated, offshore tax haven.

Francis has made clear he has no tolerance for corruption or for Vatican officials who use their jobs for personal ambition or gain. He has said he wants a "poor" church that is concerned for the world's needy, and he has also noted, perhaps tongue in cheek, that "St. Peter didn't have a bank account."

Prosecutor Rossi said the Swiss operation involved three people, all of whom were arrested Friday: Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in the Vatican's main finance office, Italian financier Giovanni Carenzio, and Giovanni Zito, who at the time of the plot was a member of the military police's agency for security and information.

Rossi detailed a remarkable plot ? uncovered by telephone wiretaps ? in which the three allegedly planned to bring into Italy some 20 million euros in cash that financier Carenzio held in his name in a Swiss bank account without paying customs at the airport, as would be required.

Scarano's attorney, Silverio Sica, said his client was something of a middleman: The 20 million euros belonged to friends who had given the money to Carenzio to invest but wanted it back. The plot would presumably enable them to avoid paying customs fees or having any paper trail of such a large amount of money entering Italy.

Rossi identified the friends as members of the Italian shipping family d'Amico and said that the money was "presumably" being held in Switzerland to avoid paying Italian taxes. An email seeking comment from the family's Rome-based company, the d'Amico Societa di Navigazione SpA, wasn't immediately returned.

According to prosecutors, Zito, the agent, called in sick to his job one day in July 2012, rented a private plane and flew with Carenzio to Locarno, Switzerland. There, Carenzio was supposed to withdraw the cash from his bank account and hand it over to Zito to bring back to Italy. The plan was so detailed there was even to be an armed police escort waiting at the airport to bring the money to Scarano's apartment in Rome, Rossi said.

"This operation was meticulously planned in all its details," Rossi said, noting that Zito was chosen to be the mule specifically because his high-ranking position in the Carabinieri would have enabled him to pass through the airport customs area without being stopped.

The money could have been transported relatively easily because euros are issued in high denominations. If the cash had been withdrawn in the largest denomination ? 500 euro notes ? it would have weighed 44 kilograms (97 pounds) and fit in a suitcase.

But at a certain point in Locarno, the deal fell through and Carenzio made excuses that the bank couldn't come up with the money, Rossi said. He declined to identify the bank.

Zito returned to Rome empty-handed but still demanded from Scarano his fee of 600,000 euros for the operation. Scarano cut him one check for 400,000 euros which he deposited. He gave him a second check for 200,000 euros, but in a bid to prevent the check from being deposited, reported it as missing, the prosecutor said.

That put a block on the check and resulted in Scarano being accused of slander for filing a false report knowing that the check was in Zito's hands, Rossi said.

Scarano, as well as the other two, are also accused of corruption. If they are indicted and convicted, they could face up to five or six years in prison, prosecutors said.

Sica, the lawyer, said Scarano said his client would respond to prosecutors' questions.

The Vatican bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR, is cooperating with Italian authorities and its lay board has launched an internal investigation, spokesman Max Hohenberg said.

Rossi, the Italian prosecutor, described the operation as one branch in a "mosaic" of investigations targeting the IOR, which has long been a source of scandal for the Holy See. That said, the Swiss investigation didn't immediately appear to directly involve the IOR.

The checks Scarano wrote to Zito, for example, came from an Italian bank account, prosecutors said. They declined to say if Scarano received any payment for his role in the plot, or if his IOR account was used at all.

Rossi's team of prosecutors in 2010 placed the top two Vatican bank officials under investigation for allegedly violating anti-money laundering norms during a routine transaction involving an IOR account at an Italian bank. They ordered the 23 million euros in the transaction seized. The money was eventually unfrozen but the two men remain under investigation.

Rossi's team is also working with prosecutors in Salerno on a separate money-laundering investigation involving Scarano and his IOR account.

According to Sica, the lawyer, Scarano took 560,000 euros ($729,000) in cash out of his IOR bank account in 2009 and carried it out of the Vatican and into Italy to help pay off a mortgage on his Salerno home.

The money had come into Scarano's IOR account from donors who gave it to the prelate thinking they were funding a home for the terminally ill in Salerno, Sica said.

To deposit the money into an Italian bank account ? and to prevent family members from finding out he had such a large chunk of cash ? he asked 56 close friends to accept 10,000 euros apiece in cash in exchange for a check or money transfer in the same amount. Scarano was then able to deposit the amounts in his Italian account.

The lawyer said Scarano had given the names of the donors to prosecutors and insisted the origin of the money was clean, that the transactions didn't constitute money-laundering, and that he only took the money "temporarily" for his personal use.

The home for terminally ill was never built, though the property has been identified, Sica said.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Scarano was suspended more than a month ago and that the Vatican was taking the appropriate measures to deal with his case. He said the Vatican had confirmed it was prepared to offer its "full cooperation" to Italian investigators.

On Wednesday, Francis named five people to head a commission of inquiry into the Vatican bank's activities and legal status "to allow for a better harmonization with the universal mission of the Apostolic See."

Arkansas Football Countdown Day 63: R.J. Morris

R.J. Morris is a player easy to root for because he's like us, living out a childhood dream.

Only nine weeks from today the crew from College Gameday will be prepping us for the first Saturday of college football, but in the interim, get to know redshirt freshman R.J. Morris.

Morris is an offensive lineman who hails from Naperville, IL, and is one of those players who makes himself easy to root for. Like most of us, he grew up a Razorback fan but instead of remaining a just a fan, he headed to join the team as a preferred walk-on.

He stands at 6-foot-4, 312-pound and played guard and tackle in high school, and mind you, Bret Bielema loves these kids too because he was once a walk-on out of high school as well.

Now while most of us never had the opportunity to accept a preferred walk-on offer, I have respect for anyone in his shoes--at any level-- who pays his own way through school while experiencing the pressures of such a demanding extracurricular activity.

If you can handle the Mississippi State-esque cowbells midway through this video for a few minutes, here are some high school highlights:

Fed's Stein puts focus on September as time to assess QE3

By Jonathan Spicer and Alister Bull

NEW YORK/WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia (Reuters) - September could be an opportune time for the Federal Reserve to consider scaling back its assets purchase, an influential official of the U.S. central bank said on Friday, though he said the Fed must take a long view of economic progress and not be blinded by the most recent data.

The remarks by Fed Governor Jeremy Stein drew the attention of economists and investors after he ticked off several examples of improvement in the labor market since the Fed launched its bond-buying program last September.

Stein's speech, and a separate one on Friday by Jeffrey Lacker, president of the Richmond Fed, had some parallels to efforts by other Fed officials earlier this week to soothe market anxieties about a pullback in the bond purchases. Nonetheless, the two officials showed a more aggressive tone on when the central bank's unprecedented policy accommodation might be reduced.

The Fed's purchase of Treasuries and mortgage bonds at a monthly pace of $85 billion has provided a huge flow of liquidity into financial markets, driving up assets from stocks to bonds.

Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose after Stein's remarks, a sharp reversal of stabilization in the market earlier in the day.

Markets had dropped hard in the days after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last week said the Fed expected to pare back on its bond purchases, known as quantitative easing, later this year and to halt it altogether by mid-2014, as long as the economy progresses as expected.

But Stein on Friday, in an unusual move, trained investors' attention on the Fed's September policy meeting, though the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee will also meet in July.

"The best approach is for the committee to be clear that in making a decision in, say, September, it will give primary weight to the large stock of news that has accumulated since the inception of the program and will not be unduly influenced by whatever data releases arrive in the few weeks before the meeting - as salient as these releases may appear to be to market participants," said Stein, who is a voting member of the policy committee.

Data from early September "will remain relevant for future decisions," even if it does not play a primary role in any policy decision in September, he said, in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

"If the news is bad, and it is confirmed by further bad news in October and November, this would suggest that the 7 percent unemployment goal is likely to be further away, and the remainder of the program would be extended accordingly," he said.

Stein's remarks drew a sharp reaction on expectations of the Fed's policy path.

"Stein's remarks cannot be lightly dismissed and raise risks that some on the committee may have already essentially decided on September," Michael Feroli, JPMorgan's chief U.S. economist, said.

Thomas Simons, an economist at Jefferies, also found significance in Stein's reference to the September policy meeting, saying that it "suggests that he is eyeing September for making a decision about changing the pace of purchases."

EXPECT MORE VOLATILITY

Lacker, one of the central bank's most hawkish officials, who is not a voter on policy this year, said it had been "wise" for Bernanke to clarify the Fed's views on future bond buying, but stressed policy would still be loose as the Fed reduces "the pace at which it is adding accommodation."

Financial markets should brace for more volatility as they digest news of a reduction in quantitative easing, he said.

"This type of volatility is a normal part of the process of incorporating new information into financial asset prices and should not interfere with the moderate-growth scenario that I have presented," Lacker told a judicial conference in West Virginia.

The Fed's policy measures, including keeping low interest rates near zero percent since late 2008 and the bond purchases, are meant to boost spending, investment, hiring and overall growth, which in the first quarter of this year was a below-average 1.8 percent annual rate.

On the labor market, where unemployment remains high at 7.6 percent, Stein noted the rate was 8.1 percent when the bond purchase program was launched last year. Monthly job growth has jumped dramatically since then, he said, adding Fed forecasts are also more optimistic.

Stein said the Fed can be more specific about its plans for QE3 as it approaches its policy goals. The timeline Bernanke articulated illustrates a "greater willingness to spell out what the committee is looking for, as opposed to a 'we'll know it when we see it' approach," he said.

Still, Stein stressed that reducing the pace of QE3 is highly conditional on the economy. He added it did not mark a change in policy and was meant only to clarify things for investors.

Stein, a relatively new but highly respected member of the powerful Fed board, turned some heads back in February when he warned the massive asset purchases were showing signs of inflating price bubbles in junk bonds and other markets.

But on Friday he said while financial stability should play a roll in monetary policy decisions, the benefits of QE3 have surpassed the costs of the program, including such stability risks.

Google brings Microsoft Office document editing to Chrome OS developer track

QuickOffice

If you look back about a year ago, you'll be reminded that Google purchased the mobile office suite Quickoffice. We finally see the fruits of the purchase, but not exactly how everyone expected to see it. Using the Microsoft Office compatibility built into Quickoffice's document editing, users on the Chrome OS developer build track can now edit both Word and Excel files without any hassles, right from their Chromebook.

Of course, being in the developer track means there is bound to be bugs. But Google has been fairly swift with pushing features through the dev and beta tracks, and we're seeing new features and additions roll into the stable branch with every release. Still, things may not be ready for prime time just yet.

To give this a try for yourself, you need to switch to the developer track of Chrome OS, and set an experimental flag. Point your browser at chrome://flags, and find the "Enable document editing" entry. Enable it and restart your Chromebook. There's a place to report any and all Quickoffice bugs right here, so be sure to report any difficulties you run into. Here's to a happy test phase, and we're looking forward to seeing Microsoft Office file editing in the stable branch soon.

Apple reportedly clinches TSMC chip manufacturing deal

Apple reportedly clinches longsought TSMC manufacturing deal

Rumors of Apple switching its chip manufacturing from Samsung to TSMC have persisted for a long, long time. However, they may be more substantial this time around: the Wall Street Journal claims that Apple quietly signed a deal with TSMC earlier this month. The agreement reportedly has TSMC taking over some of Apple's chip production in 2014. Technical setbacks kept the agreement from happening any sooner, according to the sources. Neither company is commenting on the accuracy of the story, although few would doubt Apple's incentives to reduce its dependency on Samsung-made silicon -- it's not keen on funding a primary competitor.

Girl doing well after second lung transplant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl who underwent a double-lung transplant amid a national debate over the organ allocation process has undergone a second transplant after the first failed and is now taking some breaths on her own, the girl's parents said Friday.

Sarah Murnaghan's parents said in an email update that the first set of lungs failed after the June 12 transplant at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Sarah was placed on machines. She received a second set of lungs on June 15.

Sarah initially received lungs from an adult donor after her parents sued over national rules that place children behind adolescents and adults on the list for adult lungs.

The girl's mother, Janet Murnaghan, said Sarah's condition began to "spiral out of control" following the first surgery. A second set of lungs was found and were transplanted though they were infected with pneumonia, making the surgery extra risky.

Her family said the second transplant was a success and Sarah has taken a few breaths on her own.

"Her doctors continue to wean her from her ventilator, her last two chest tubes were removed today we are taking steps to prepare her for extubation again," her parents said. "We're not out of the woods, but Sarah's health is trending in the right direction."

It was not clear if the second set of lungs were from an adult or juvenile donor.

The Newtown Square girl suffers from severe cystic fibrosis.

The double delta wing is a simplified configuration used for studying aircraft aerodynamics. It is composed of a highly-swept delta wing connected in front of the main delta wing with a smaller sweep, reflecting the combination of a leading edge extension and the swept main wing. The aerodynamic performance of such wings, which includes the behavior of the leeside vortical flows at moderate and high angles of attack (AoA) at low speed, is of research interest.

The prominent aerodynamic feature of the delta wing is the dominant leading edge vortex pair on the lee side, particularly over wings with sharp leading edges. For the single delta wing, research techniques can well describe the main vortices in the absence of vortex breakdown, including good prediction of the surface pressure distribution. Because of the appearance of a geometric discontinuity in the double delta wing connecting the strake and the wing, a wing vortex is generated at the discontinuity inducing a nonlinear interaction with the strake vortex. This nonlinear interaction makes it difficult to obtain an accurate prediction of the aerodynamic performance of such a double delta wing. Fujii considered that it would be difficult to obtain reasonable agreement with experimental results even with a large increase in the computational grid.

Based on current work, the understanding of flows past a double delta wing with sharp leading edges is as follows: 1) vortices are the dominant flow feature; 2) the basic vortical system consists of the strake and wing vortices, with secondary or even tertiary vortices; 3) vortex breakdown will occur when the AoA increases beyond a certain angle. The breakdown of the wing vortex occurs prior to that of the strake vortex. Other than the dominant vortices, small-scale structures initially appear at the wing tip at certain AoA, and massively-separated flows emerge. With an increase in the AoA, the region of separation gradually enlarges, and finally the whole upper wing is immersed in the massively separated flow. It is widely accepted that traditional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) is not appropriate for simulation when massive separation occurs. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy simulation (LES) can be used but at high cost. Detached-eddy simulation (DES) or a RANS/LES hybrid method combines the advantages of DNS and LES fitting the needs of engineering development while providing the useful details needed for fundamental research, and are thus considered suitable tools for studying such flow regimes. The applications using this method have been conducted on various aspects of fluid mechanics.

Because of the importance of the vortical flows of the double delta wing, every pattern of vortices needs to be carefully studied by computational and experimental analysis. As mentioned above, DES or RANS/LES serve as efficient ways to study the vortical flow when massively separated flow appears. The 76/40 double delta wing is thought to be important for investigations in which the topology of the vortex-dominated flow field is advantageous for atmospheric flight using vortical flows in air combat for takeoff and landing. In the present work, we use SA-DES to compute the massively separated flows of the 76/40 double delta wing previously studied by Verhaagen. Through computation, we found a new type of cross-flow vortex, which occurs at an AoA starting from 15. The vortex differs from the strake and wing vortex or other vortices in massively separated flows.

By means of physical analysis based on the numerical simulation, we conclude that the vortices are caused by cross-flow instability. Because of the specific features of the double delta wing, the cross-flow is primarily caused by the induction of the leading edge vortices, which differs from the cause of the cross flow over the swept blunt wing.

Using a velocity transformation, we provide the cross-section topology of the cross-flow vortices and information about the singular points on the section. The analysis shows that the speed of movement of the vortex reaches that of free stream. The wave length of the vortex array and the characteristic frequency are also obtained, providing useful information for further experimental investigation.

It is also shown by analysis that the cross-flow vortex can cause a 10-20% deviation of the pressure distribution to the averaged counterpart. It should be noted that the deviation is local and unsteady, which should be considered in the evaluation of the influence of vortices on aerodynamic performance.

Finally we propose a new type of cross-flow vortex that differs from the vortical substructure.

Celebration of special education work (From Daily Echo)

Celebration of special education work

SOUTHAMPTON is to be recognised for its ground-breaking work in improving outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and their families.

Southampton City Council and NHS Southampton City PCT were awarded ?pathfinder? status by the Government in 2011, placing the city among the first in the country to start delivering reforms aimed at improving services for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) from birth through to age 25.

The SEND Pathfinder team will be holding a stakeholder event on Tuesday, July 2, from 1pm, at the Eastpoint Centre to celebrate the achievements of the city?s highly-regarded programme ahead of the national roll-out of new legislation next year.

Representatives from the Department for Education and the Council for Disabled Children will be delivering presentations at the event.

Southampton City Council?s Cabinet member for children?s services, Cllr Sarah Bogle, will also be attending alongside other councillors and senior managers, colleagues from the health service and the voluntary sector as well as parents and service users.

Recognition of Southampton?s work has included being asked to take on a regional and national ?champion? role to support other local authorities as they prepare for the implementation of the new legislation.

Cllr Bogle said: ?Southampton is leading the way nationally on innovative approaches to supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

?We need to treat every child as an individual and make sure our services meet their needs and those of their families.?

Gandolfini funeral draws family, fans, stars in NY

June 27, 2013 at 1:36 PM ET

Family, friends and fans of James Gandolfini gathered in New York Thursday for a final remembrance of the actor known for his role as the tough-guy mob boss on "The Sopranos." Co-stars from that series -- usually recognized for their stoicism -- embraced one another with trembling lips and sorrowful faces as they entered the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine.

Gandolfini, 51, died of a heart attack in Rome on June 19. His 90-minute funeral was led by The Very Reverend Dr. James A Kowalski. Gandolfini?s wife, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, provided the first of four remembrances. In brief but emotional remarks, she spoke tearfully of her late husband as a great father to his children, 13-year-old Michael and 9-month-old Liliana. She called him an ?honest, kind and loving man? who ?ironically, was extremely private.?

The casket carrying James Gandolfini is carried out after his funeral at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York on Thursday.

Two close friends of Gandolfini?s spoke next: Thomas Richardson and Susan Aston. Richardson talked of being in Rome with Gandolfini, lighting a candle in a cathedral and praying at the statue of St. Francis. ?Jim grew each and every day because he was open,? said Richardson, who added that with Gandolfini, ?every day was an adventure.?

Aston was not just a friend; she had worked with Gandolfini for decades. On ?The Sopranos? she served as his dialogue coach. She remembered the two of them working together in the 1980s and recalled how Gandolfini once shored up her courage before going onstage by saying, ?What?s the worst that can happen? We suck??

At one point, she dropped yet another nickname for the actor, referring to him as ?Buck.?

David Chase, creator and executive producer of ?The Sopranos,? wrapped up the remembrances with his own, which took the form of a letter. ?Dear Jimmy,? he began, then addressed the eulogy directly to the late actor. He said he wanted to get some laughs, that?s what all the advice he heard said he should do, but ?I?m too sad and full of despair.?

Nonetheless, Chase?s remembrance did elicit some laughs, particularly when he said he was ?scared? to speak at the service, and considered running away for four days, a reference to the time Gandolfini vanished from production on ?Sopranos? early in the show?s run.

He spoke of working with Gandolfini, who took his role to heart. One scene they filmed involved the actor slamming a refrigerator door in irritation repeatedly, even though the script didn?t specifically call for him to do that -- he ultimately broke the refrigerator. ?This role, this role, the places it takes me to,? Chase said the actor muttered about that event.

Later, Chase noted, ?Sometimes you tried too hard. The refrigerator is one example."

David Chase, center, creator of "The Sopranos," attends Thursday's funeral.

But Chase revealed much about how he saw Gandolfini and the character of Tony Soprano with an anecdote that also came from the show. It was a hot day of filming, and he caught Gandolfini sitting in a lawn chair in black socks and shoes, pants rolled up, a wet handkerchief on his head to help him stay cool. Chase said he saw that and ?was filled with love, because I knew I was in the right place.? He said that was precisely what his own relatives used to do on a hot day, working in construction (?What is it about Italians and concrete,? quipped Chase) in New Jersey. ?I was so proud of our heritage,? he said, choking up.

Chase also recalled a time when Gandolfini told him, "I just want to be a man."

"The paradox with you I always felt was I was seeing a young boy, because you are boyish. ... That is why you were an amazing actor, that child inside,? Chase said.

He ended his ?letter? by relating a scene they never shot, but one he had mapped out: Tony Soprano is stranded in the Meadowlands with nothing in his pockets except some change, no crew around him, and has to board a bus to get home like everyone else. The idea was the episode would end with Tony?s face on the bus as Joan Osborne?s ?What if God Was One of Us? played (and its lines ?what if God was one of us/just a slob like one of us/just a stranger on the bus/trying to make His way home?), as the credits rolled.

Chase then ended his speech with the same letter format: ?Love, David.?

Among others who attended the service were Gandolfini's ?Sopranos? co-stars Edie Falco, Dominic Chianese, Joe Pantoliano, Aida Turturro and Julianna Margulies. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was also in attendance.

Gandolfini was also remembered Wednesday at a private, invitation-only wake held in Park Ridge, N.J. Gandolfini?s wife and daughter were among the first to arrive, according to the New York Daily News.

"It's a nightmare for the whole family," Bob Price, whose wife is a Gandolfini cousin, told the paper. "It's a horrible, horrible thing. Everybody is just devastated."
