'Pond' writer parodies politicians and protesters (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? As candidates crisscross New Hampshire in their quest for votes, an Academy Award-winning writer thinks the time is ripe for "Political Suicide."

That is the title of four one-act plays Ernest Thompson ? who wrote "On Golden Pond"_ will stage beginning Sunday at Pitman's Freight Room in Laconia.

The plays are dark comedies that parody politicians and protesters alike.

One is about taking the best attribute from each of the candidates to make one candidate who might excite two jaded polling place workers. Another is about a small-town protester who longs to be part of a movement but attracts the attention of no one but the police chief.

Thompson told the Associated Press on Friday that the plays each take a different angle on where our culture is at, but called them "equal opportunity offending plays."

"I like stirring things up a little," Thompson said.

Thompson bills his plays as "funnier than the debates" and said the debates inspired one of the plays ? "Mr. Potato Head" ? about rolling all the candidates into one dynamic candidate.

"They were pretty funny to watch ? those debates ? but also pretty sad, because you kept thinking someone has to stand up and say something profound," Thompson said.

Thompson says he purposely did not shape his characters to resemble any of the current candidates.

"What I'm hoping is that four years from now we can do these same plays and they'll have the same resonance," he said.

Thompson wrote one of the plays_ about a disillusioned senator _six years ago. He says he wrote the other three recently, as campaigning intensified.

The 1981 movie "On Golden Pond" ? filmed in New Hampshire ? netted Oscars for Thompson and stars Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda. Last summer Thompson directed the stage production of the play, which he wrote in 1978 for a summer stock theater in Holderness.

Thompson, 62, moved to New Hampshire from Los Angeles 21 years ago.

"The fun part of being in New Hampshire is that you really get to see those characters up close and personal," he said of the candidates.

Thompson said he chose Pitman's Freight Room in downtown Laconia in part because of the short commute from his home and production studio in New Hampton. He said the venue holds about 70 and features a stage they assembled for the 16 performances, including one the night of the primary Jan. 10. The play runs through Jan. 15, then reopens for six additional performances in early February.

Pitman's owner Dick Mitchell said that there is a lot of buzz around town about Thompson's production and that it's exciting for the renovated train depot to host its first theater production.

"It's very timely, and I think his message is on target ? everything is screwed up," Mitchell said.

Thompson he had a run-in with the Mitt Romney camp Friday ? not over politics, but turf.

Romney campaign workers wanted to take over Pitman's Freight Room for nine hours Friday to set up for and stage an evening rally, Mitchell said. But Thompson has dibs on the property.

"The show has to go on," Thompson said, laughing.

Trailer for Netflix?s first original series hits the web (Yahoo! News)

Despite a somewhat rough year, streaming media and DVD rental giant?Netflix is updating its viewing options with new original content, including its first original series. Called?Lilyhammer, it's the unlikely story of an American mobster who relocates to the small Norwegian town of Lilyhammer as part of the witness protection program.

The Sopranos actor Stephen Van Zandt plays the mobster, and the trailer offers some tantalizing glimpses of what should prove to be an interesting fish-out-of-water story as an East Coast gangster who may or may not be completely over his less-than-legal ways tries to adjust to life in a completely different environment.

Lilyhammer isn't the first original content purchased by Netflix. Back in March, the company announced that it had outbid giants including HBO and AMC for a series called?House of Cards. According to?Netflix's blog, that series will air in late 2012.

Interestingly, Netflix has decided to release the entire?Lilyhammer series ? eight episodes total?? at the same time, so viewers will be able to watch it all at once if they'd like. It's an interesting and potentially risky move, but we assume that they're banking on fans helping spread the word virally, linking and sharing episodes to build buzz. Only time will tell if Netflix's gamble pays off!

Video: Romney: I?m ?delighted? by Iowa results

>>> mitt romney is with us now from des moines , fresh off his narrow victory in iowa . governor, good morning, nice to see you.

>> thanks, matt, good to be with you.

>> you didn't spend an awful lot of time in iowa , not until the late going. did you exceed expectations or more disappointed you didn't walk out of the state with a decisive victory .

>> i'm delighted. a few weeks ago we were behind in the polls, able to do pretty darned well last night and i've been building a national campaign and making campaign appearances in states coming up down the road. i want to make sure this is not just a one state send-off but instead we're able to get the delegates we need to get the nomination so it's a long road ahead. i'm hoping to do well but it felt very, very good last night when the final numbers came in.

>> you came in second in iowa , back in 2008 , you've been campaigning for four more years and walk out of the state with just 66 more votes than you got in 2008 and here comes that number again, governor romney, 25%, you can't seem to break it. i'm a golfer. i equate it to a good golfer who can't seem to break 80. is it frustrating to you?

>> no, we've got a field of seven viable candidates right now so it's just mathematically almost impossible to do a lot better than that. i look back to 1980 as well. ronald reagan got 29% of the votes and ultimately he was able to become our nominee. it's going to narrow down and when we get down to a smaller number of candidates, somebody's going to get the 50.1% they need to be the nominee.

>> you congratulated rick rick santorum because of his strong support. because of the support he's receiving, 25% in the state he does shine a spotlight on what political observers say is your achilles heel , the conservative voters are not completely comfortable with your record as a conservative. how do you convince them down the road you are a guy who can uphold their conservative principles?

>> well i think people are going to take a look at my record. they'll also remember i ran for president four years ago and mike huckabee and i were the two conservatives battling in the race and take a look at my book and the believes i have. people get judged by their entire life experience. i understand that and i know there will be a lot of attacks. i got a pretty big target on myself, i got broad shoulders. if people support me, that would be great, if they don't that's all right as well.

>> congress ron paul , 21.4% of the support in iowa . what impact does he have on the race as you move to new hampshire and beyond?

>> i think ron paul continues to have a strong message. he indicates he's got more than just a 10% group following him. a number of folks who were drawn by his convictions. look, i vehemently disagree with his foreign policy prescriptions but understand that some people have a different view and i'll look forward to carrying our message down the road. i can't tell exactly how it's going to work out but now you've got three people battling for the top spot.

>> newt gingrich "he's not telling the american people the truth. it's just like his pretense that he's a conservative. i think he ought to be honest to the american people and try to win as the real mitt romney ." he plans to stay in the race almost as a front line blocker to help separate the vote and support between you and rick rick santorum . how do you respond to that?

>> you know, i understand the speaker is pretty disappointed. he was well in the lead nationally and way in the lead here in iowa , and finished in fourth spot and i can understand that disappointment and i also understand he'll get out there and make his case and that's right and he's a strong person. i wish him well and i wish calista well.

>> mitt romney , governor, congratulations on your win last night.

Imagine that! 123rd Rose Parade featured flying pigs, surfing dogs

PASADENA - Under a cloudless sky, the 123rd Rose Parade strutted its stuff along Colorado Boulevard Monday, entertaining the crowds with high-energy marching bands, precision equestrian units and floral floats with flying pigs, surfing bulldogs, smoke-breathing dragons and a tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor.

"It was everything we hoped for - it exceeded it," said Lynn Pien, of Woodbury, Minn., who was making her first Rose Parade visit. "My favorite was the Marine Corps Band and the flying pigs" on the award-winning La Canada Flintridge float.

After years of watching the parade on TV, Pien said she and her husband, a Wisconsin alumnus, decided to celebrate two milestones: 30 years of marriage and the last college

tuition payment for their third son.

"Out son graduated in December - and we went to the Rose Bowl," Mike Pien joked. "It was a lifelong dream."

Many lining the street at the start of the 5.5-mile parade route said having the parade on Jan. 2 didn't affect the holiday atmosphere. Just 10 arrests, including four for drunkenness, were reported overnight.

"The crowds were more family-oriented," Pasadena Police spokeswoman Phlunte Riddle said just before the parade started. Arrests were down in comparison to previous years, she said.

To keeps tabs on the "Occupy" movement protestors who followed the parade as planned, a platoon from the L.A. County Sheriff's Response Team tailed them along Colorado - many of the team members getting in the spirit by posing for photographs on the four vehicles before heading off.

Chanting protestors, who joined the regular "You Still Need Jesus" sign-carriers at the end of the parade, seemed in a festive mood. To a jazz band accompaniment, marchers appeared to be making their point with humor.

"I'm a job-creator," read one sign, carried by a group in yachting togs, tops hats and evening gowns. "Just ask my servants."

The real Rose Parade royalty, a beaming Queen Drew Washington in white and the six Rose Princesses in deep blue, had the regal wave down pat. Parade Grand Marshal J.R. Martinez also drew cheers and applause as he rode in an open 1933 V-16 Cadillac with his mother, Maria, and girlfriend Diana Jones.

There were more cheers for the spectacular moves some of the 21 marching bands made, wheeling around the 90-degree turn from Orange Grove Boulevard on to Colorado.

The hometown Arcadia High School Apaches almost landed in the ground-level spectators' laps as part of their precision turn, and the high-stepping University of Wisconsin band's maneuver was almost upstaged by the first Rose Parade appearance of the Kyoto Tachibana High School Green Band from Japan.

The 142 band-members took the corner at the run, bringing many in the crowd to their feet.

In a nod to Tournament of Roses President Rick Jackson's Swedish heritage, his car was preceded by the 75-member Royal Swedish Navy Cadet Band from Karlskrona.

Equestrian units included some favorites, such as the Broken Horn Ropers, who performed lasso tricks along the route, the Hermanos Banuelos Charro Team and the War Horse Foundation, whose members were dressed in cavalry uniforms from the Napoleonic era. First-timers included the Escondido Mounted Posse - whose horses' tails were ringed with sunflowers - and the Cowgirls Historical Foundation.

One rider from the 100-member Palominos on Parade group was thrown at the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado and another horse from the group decided to cut out at the turn, but no injuries were reported, according to TofR officials.

Only one float, "The Dream Believers" sponsored by the Discover Card, had to be towed, officials said.

Among the crowd favorites were the "Preserving Paradise" float by Dole, which won the Sweepstakes Trophy, the "Our Champion" tribute to Elizabeth Taylor from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and China Airlines "Spirit of Prosperity and Harmony, with a smoke-breathing dragon.

The 116-foot "Surf's Up" float By Natural Balance was probably the big crowd-pleaser, as Tillman the skateboarding bulldog and friends surfed the waves on an 80-foot stretch of water - with only a couple of wipe-outs.

The parade was spectacular, but this year's floats were a little short on animation and special effects, parade regular Bobby Herbeck of Long Beach said.

But at least one Oregon fan, Jeremy Shumacher from Portland found his first Rose Parade pretty impressive.

"It was beautiful," he said, before heading to the Rose Bowl. "Surfing dogs - come on!"

Taiwan, Israel sign aviation pact to boost ties: MOFA

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) Taiwan and Israel have signed an aviation agreement that will pave the way for direct air links between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Monday.

The accord, inked in the Israeli capital of Tel Aviv Monday, will also help boost bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation, the MOFA said in a statement.

The pact was signed at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Tel Aviv by Chang Liang-jen, Taiwan's representative in Israel, and his Israeli counterpart, Simona Halperin, on behalf of their respective governments, the MOFA said.

The agreement establishes the commercial aviation rights allowing carriers from the two countries to use each other's air space and covered other details related to cooperation between carriers and the handling of airline operations.

The pact follows a bilateral tax agreement signed in 2009 and a mutual visa exemption accord signed in 2011 to facilitate civilian and financial exchanges between the two countries, the MOFA said.

Noting that the signing of the three pacts has increased the affinity between the two countries, the MOFA said the latest aviation pact is expected to encourage Israeli businessmen to use Taiwan as a springboard to tap into the Chinese and Southeast Asian markets.

According to government statistics, Taiwan-Israel trade totaled NT$28.1 billion (US$927.4 million) in the first eight months of 2011, up more than 17 percent from the year-earlier level.

MOFA officials said two-way trade will increase further after the inauguration of bilateral direct air links in the near future. (By Emmanuelle Tzeng and Sofia Wu) enditem/ls

Ethiopian Troops Enter Somalia, Take Control of Border Town; Residents Reported to Flee

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: saylicipress.net --- Sunday, January 01, 2012
NAIROBI, Kenya ? Hundreds of Ethiopian Troops poured into a western Somalia border town on Saturday, opening a new front against the militant group al-Shabab, which now faces hostile militaries on three sides. Resident Mohammed Abdi said hundreds of residents fled Beledweyne on Saturday after hundreds of Ethiopian and Somali Troops moved in. Capt. Hashi Nor of the Somali military confirmed that Somali and Ethiopian Troops had moved in. ?I saw Ethiopian Troops standing at the doors of neighboring homes. Somali soldiers are also searching the homes,? Abdi said. ?Al-Shabab retreated back to Bulo Burte and also many of the residents fled, and those who remained are in their homes.? The military movement appears to be a third front against al-Shabab, Somalia?s strongest militant group. Kenyan Troops moved into Somalia in mid-October in a push against the militants in the country?s south. African Union Troops from Uganda, Burundi and most recently from Djibouti have mostly pushed al-Shabab fighters out of the capital, Mogadishu. ?We are in full control of Beledweyne now and our Troops will move forward in the coming hours,? Nor, the Somali military officer, said by phone from Beledweyne. Abdi said the sound of gunfire could be heard in Beledweyne but that he did not believe actual battle was taking place. However, al-Shabab on its official Twitter feed said that a battle that began at 6 a.m. was still ?raging? in the city as of midday. ...
