Discovery of historical photos sheds light on Greenland ice loss

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A chance discovery of 80-year-old photo plates in a Danish basement is providing new insight into how Greenland glaciers are melting today.

Researchers at the National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark -- that country's federal agency responsible for surveys and mapping -- had been storing the glass plates since explorer Knud Rasmussen's expedition to the southeast coast of Greenland in the early 1930s.

In this week's online edition of Nature Geoscience, Ohio State University researchers and colleagues in Denmark describe how they analyzed ice loss in the region by comparing the images on the plates to aerial photographs and satellite images taken from World War II to today.

Taken together, the imagery shows that glaciers in the region were melting even faster in the 1930s than they are today, said Jason Box, associate professor of geography and researcher at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. A brief cooling period starting in the mid-20th century allowed new ice to form, and then the melting began to accelerate again in the 2000s.

"Because of this study, we now have a detailed historical analogue for more recent glacier loss," Box said. "And we've confirmed that glaciers are very sensitive indicators of climate."

Pre-satellite observations of Greenland glaciers are rare. Anders Anker Bj?rk, doctoral fellow at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and lead author of the study, is trying to compile all such imagery. He found a clue in the archives of The Arctic Institute in Copenhagen in 2011.

"We found flight journals for some old planes, and in them was a reference to National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark," Bj?rk said.

As it happens, researchers at the National Survey had already contacted Bj?rk about a find of their own.

"They were cleaning up in the basement and had found some old glass plates with glaciers on them. The reason the plates were forgotten was that they were recorded for mapping, and once the map was produced they didn't have much value."

Those plates turned out to be documentation of Rasmussen's 7th Thule Expedition to Greenland. They contained aerial photographs of land, sea and glaciers in the southeast region of the country, along with travel photos of Rasmussen's team.

The researchers digitized all the old images and used software to look for differences in the shape of the southeast Greenland coastline where the ice meets the Atlantic Ocean. Then they calculated the distance the ice front moved in each time period.

Over the 80 years, two events stand out: glacial retreats from 1933-1934 and 2000-2010. In the 1930s, fewer glaciers were melting than are today, and most of those that were melting were land-terminating glaciers, meaning that they did not contact the sea.

Those that were melting retreated an average of 20 meters per year -- the fastest retreating at 374 meters per year. Fifty-five percent of the glaciers in the study had similar or higher retreat rates during the 1930s than they do today.

Still, more glaciers in southeast Greenland are retreating today, and the average ice loss is 50 meters per year. That's because a few glaciers with very fast melting rates -- including one retreating at 887 meters per year -- boost the overall average.

But to Box, the most interesting part of the study is what happened between the two melting events.

From 1943-1972, southeast Greenland cooled -- probably due to sulfur pollution, which reflects sunlight away from Earth.

Sulfur dioxide is a poisonous gas produced by volcanoes and industrial processes. It has been tied to serious health problems and death, and is also the main ingredient in acid rain. Its presence in the atmosphere peaked just after the Clean Air Act was established in 1963. As it was removed from the atmosphere, the earlier warming resumed.

The important point is not that deadly pollution caused the climate to cool, but rather that the brief cooling allowed researchers to see how Greenland ice responded to the changing climate.

The glaciers responded to the cooling more rapidly than researchers had seen in earlier studies. Sixty percent of the glaciers advanced during that time, while 12 percent were stationary. And now that the warming has resumed, the glacial retreat is dominated by marine-terminating outlet glaciers, the melting of which contributes to sea level rise.

"From these images, we see that the mid-century cooling stabilized the glaciers," Box said. "That suggests that if we want to stabilize today's accelerating ice loss, we need to see a little cooling of our own."

Southeast Greenland is a good place to study the effects of climate change, he explained, because the region is closely tied to air and water circulation patterns in the North Atlantic.

"By far, more storms pass through this region -- transporting heat into the Arctic -- than anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. Climate change brings changes in snowfall and air temperature that compete for influence on a glacier's net behavior," he said.

Co-authors on the study include Kurt H. Kj?r, Niels J. Korsgaard, Kristian K. Kjeldsen, and Svend Funder at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen; Shfaqat A. Khan of the National Space Institute, Technical University of Denmark; Camilla S. Andresen of the Department of Marine Geology and Glaciology at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland; and Nicolaj K. Larsen of the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University.

Photos, satellite images and other data for the study were provided by the National Survey and Cadastre; The Scott Polar Research Institute in the United Kingdom; the Arctic Institute in Denmark; researchers Bea Csatho and Sudhagar Nagarajan of the Geology Department at the University at Buffalo; and the NASA Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center at the USGS/Earth Resources Observation and Science Center of Sioux Falls, S.D. Andreas Pedersen of the Danish company MapWork wrote the script for the software used in the study.

Justin Bieber Kicks It Old-School For 'Die In Your Arms'

Bieber pays homage to Motown soul with new Believe single.

Justin Bieber's new single "Die in Your Arms" is full of funky beats, Motown harmonies and good old-fashioned romantic longing. In the song, produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Bieber just wants to make the apple of his eye believe he loves her so much that he'd rather die in her arms than be away from her for too long.

The song's vintage swing, finger snaps and melodies certainly recall the heyday of feel-good R&B from the 1960s, which is mirrored in the song's sentiment. On the chorus, Bieber sings, "Honestly, the truth is, if I could just die in your arms/ I wouldn't mind/ 'Cause every time you touch me/ I just die in your arms/ It feels so right/ So baby, baby, baby, please don't stop girl."

In keeping with the song's vintage feel, at one point, he breaks from singing to say, "Oh, baby, I know loving you ain't easy, but it sure is worth a try."

"Die" is the follow-up to the more pop-'n'-b-leaning "Boyfriend," which he dropped back in March. Last week he dropped a remix to the song, featuring 2 Chainz, Mac Miller and Asher Roth, which certainly ups the song's hip-hop ante quite a bit. "And we can be like Selena and Biebs/ Wild and free, a couple disobedient teens/ Sneaking out to meet like two o' clock in the eve/ Paparazzi ain't a problem, we just hide on the beach," Roth spits on the track.

Bieber is currently abroad promoting his June 19 album release, Believe, amid allegations he got into a scuffle with a paparazzo over the weekend while out in Los Angeles with girlfriend Selena Gomez.

"i hope when you guys hear #BELIEVE you finally understand how i feel about you. I appreciate and love you. this is about us. thank you," he tweeted over the weekend about the album release, shortly after news broke of the fray with the photographer.

NEWBERRY, Mich. (AP) ? Homes and cabins make up a third of the nearly 100 structures destroyed by a wildfire burning across more than 30 square miles of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, officials said Monday.

The lost property includes Pike Lake Resort near Pike Lake in Luce County.

"I was still hoping that they would stop it," owner Diane Ricketts said of the fire. "With my husband gone, I'm not going to rebuild. We're just going to go on and take it day by day and see what's going to happen."

The Duck Lake Fire began with a lightning strike last week and burned more than 22,000 acres, or 34 square miles, but was 51 percent contained by Monday, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Parts of Michigan are extremely dry and thirsty for rain. Fireworks and outdoor burning are banned in 49 of the state's 83 counties, especially in northern Michigan.

The DNR said 95 structures have been destroyed, including 34 homes or cabins. No injuries have been reported.

Fire managers explained the firefighting effort to about 200 people Sunday in Newberry, a community closest to the fire, 75 miles northwest of the Mackinac Bridge. The strategy includes aircraft dumping water.

"I didn't know what to expect," said Dennis Nezich, a DNR spokesman. "People were very polite, they listened."

Tips On How You Can Achieve Your Dream Wedding

The only required elements of a wedding are the bride, the groom, a minister, and, naturally, love itself. All of the other things, while they can add to the experience of the overall day, are added stresses and distractions. This article will help you have a wedding to remember.

Make sure you do a little research on what the weather is going to be like. If it's excessively hot, guests might not be comfortable at a long outdoor wedding. On the other hand, if it is too cold, your guests may exit early. Provide comfort to your guests with small accommodations and features, like having fans available if you are having a summer wedding.

Be sure to inform the caterer that your reception will be outside. They will need to plan your meal knowing that the weather could be less than ideal for your food. You could use covered chafing dishes, or keep the food inside a tent. If you can, use a small fridge for keeping drinks cool.

If you aren't planning a reception meal, choose comfortable furniture for seating instead of tables and chairs. You can witness far more social interaction among your guests if they are seated in chaises, lounges and maybe even comfortable sectionals. Plush seating offers a way for their to be separate lounging areas, as well as a place for guests to get comfortable and relax.

Create a list of what you want to have at your wedding, ranking items by importance. Flowers are usually one of the most important parts of a wedding, and the cake and venue are usually up near the top, too. By having a plan of what is most important to you, you can set aside funding for each item and ensure you get the wedding of your dreams.

One affordable alternative to elaborate floral arrangements is placing multiple potted plants of varying sizes throughout the ceremony and reception sites. Seek out plants in lovely glazed pots, or make a simple stone look elegant with some ribbons and paint. When the wedding is over, the guests can then take those plants home with them as a favor and have a constant reminder of the new couple.

If at all possible, you should schedule a relaxing or calming ritual for the morning of the big day. A massage is an excellent use of your time, or if you prefer a manicure and pedicure that's an option as well.

Choose wedding decorations that reflect your personality and that of your partner. Your decorations should also help tell the story of your relationship with the person. Pick out a theme that reflects your time together.

For example, choosing which flowers you want to have in your bouquet or table settings will rely on what's available in your new location. Contact florists near the destination and you can find out which flowers are available.

If you intend to hold your wedding outdoors, devise a contingency plan in case weather or other problems prevent the wedding from going smoothly. Set up a large canopy for shade or rain. A location with access to the indoors would also work well, just in case of bad weather. By placing wooden planks onto the ground, your guests can have their footwear protected from the mud.

A piece of fabric that matches your cake can be placed on a table and function as the focal point. A pretty tablecloth made of textured fabric, velvet, shiny satin or a lace that matches the wedding dress are all nice choices.

For couples that enjoy traveling, look for wedding items and decorations that reflect this interest. For example, you could make your wedding invites or your save-the-date cards look as though they were vintage postcards or travel passes. You could use a worn leather suitcase to display things such as your wedding program, photographs, or favors for the guest.

If you have plenty of extra time but not a lot of extra money, then consider printing your own wedding invitations. Creating your own invitations from a kit will give you more choices, including the ink color, creating your own wording and your choice of font.

Do not crowd tables with too many flowers. Flowers can be obstructive to guests a lot of the time. Additionally, many people are allergic to flowers. Try putting some scent free candles on your wedding tables.

If you want your colorful wedding cake as the focal point of your reception, present it on a coordinating fabric tablecloth. Whether you use a solid piece of fabric or opt for one with a pattern, choosing the right material can help attract your guests' attention and create a more stunning visual display. Consider the fabric's texture as well as its color when choosing display fabrics.

You will probably want to take pictures with many of the guests that attend your wedding. If you don't have a predetermined schedule, it can be very difficult to track everyone down for pictures during your event. Tell your guests where and when you will be taking pictures and make sure your photographer also knows.

Perhaps following family traditions is tempting, but remember that this day is about you and your spouse. Thank them for any suggestions and kindly decline their ideas with an explanation that it is your turn to make these decisions. This will ensure that you have no regrets when you look back on the day you got married.

Flowers look beautiful as centerpieces on the dinner tables, but don't overdo it. In many cases, it will just prevent guests from talking to each other. Plus, some guests may be allergic to flowers. Opt for using non-scented candles instead of flower arrangements for a romantic and luxurious look.

Receptions are best held in the early afternoon. Most people will drink less during the day, which will cut back on the cost to fill the bar. Post-lunch receptions usually cost less, too. The money saved here can be used elsewhere.

Planning a wedding can be very stressful, so in order to give yourself enough time to prepare, set a date where you can get everything done. By planning early and developing a time line, you can ensure that everything will be completed on schedule, allowing you to rest the day before the wedding. If you can find time for it, schedule a relaxing activity.

Religious practices will be a part of your wedding, and also an important part of your marriage. It may help to discuss this with your families so that they understand how you plan on handling dual faiths in your marriage.

A lot of people dream of their wedding for their whole lives, right up to the moment it happens. This gives weddings an almost ethereal feel. The planning can be overwhelming though. The above advice should be a boon to you while you plan your wedding day, and provide you a sense of relief.

UN: 32 children among dozens killed in Syrian town

Dozens of people are dead in Syria after the latest wave of violence. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

BEIRUT -- More than 92 people were killed in a single Syrian town, the U.N. team monitoring conditions in Syria said Saturday.

"This morning U.N. military and civilian observers went to Houla and counted more than 32 children under the age of 10 and over 60 adults killed," said the head of U.N. team monitoring the ceasefire, which has yet to take hold.

"The observers confirmed from examination of ordinances the use of artillery tank shells," Maj. Gen. Robert Mood said in a statement, without elaborating. "Whoever started, whoever responded and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence should be held responsible."

The bloodied bodies of children, some with their skulls split open, were shown in footage posted to YouTube purporting to show the victims of the shelling in the central town of Houla on Friday.?

In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded "the government of Syria immediately cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers".?

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was coordinating a "strong response" to the killings and would call for the U.N. Security Council to meet in the coming days.?

The carnage underlined just how far Syria is from any negotiated path out of the 14-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.?

Activists said Assad's forces shelled the town of Houla after security forces killed a protester and following skirmishes between troops and fighters from the Sunni Muslim-led insurgency fighting Syria's rulers, who belong to the minority Alawite sect.

Syrian state television aired some of the footage disseminated by activists after the killing in Houla, calling the bodies victims of a massacre committed by "terrorist" gangs.

Reuters

These were among the bodies being prepared for burial in Houla, Syria, on Saturday.

It also showed video of bodies with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head, sprawled on bloodstained mattresses.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said residents continued to flee the town, in central Homs province, in fear that artillery fire would resume.

Syria calls the revolt a "terrorist" conspiracy run from abroad, a veiled reference to Sunni Muslim Gulf powers that want to see weapons provided to an insurgency led by Syria's majority Sunnis against Assad, a member of the minority Alawite sect.

The U.N. says more than 9,000 people have been killed, most of them civilians, in the uprising.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

E3 No Longer Necessary? | Airborne Gamer

I read an article this week where the author made a comment about E3 no longer being necessary in this day and age of gaming.? (Sorry I can?t find it now.)? It got me thinking, was this person right?

Their big argument was that with mobile and downloadable games E3 isn?t necessary because gamers are getting their favorite pastime in new and quicker ways.? It did state that for console gamers it is still somewhat valid because not all of that is downloadable, but for the most part it?s an old convention that should just no longer be put on every year.

On one hand, I agree because gamers can download games to their consoles, phones, pads, and computers without leaving the comfort of their homes.? On the other hand, some of the biggest news is announced at this yearly event.? The anticipation is always high and the surprises can be awesome.

For PC gamers it might not be something to think about since the majority of news is console related but not all the games revealed are for the Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii.? However, the computer games do seem to get the short end of the stick at this event.

Couldn?t game makers and developers just do an online announcement on a certain day that would be the same as E3?? They could but for some it might not have the same impact.

Facebook stock climbs, but company faces lawsuits

(AP) ? Facebook's fourth day of trading as a public company saw an increase in the company's stock price and shareholder lawsuits related to the social network's botched initial public offering.

Facebook Inc.'s stock climbed $1, or 3.2 percent, to close at $32 on Wednesday. But the gain was only a small reprieve for shareholders. The stock's rocky inaugural trading day Friday was followed by a two-day decline. The stock is still trading nearly 16 percent below its $38 IPO price.

The initial public trading of Facebook's stock was tarnished Friday morning by a half-hour delay, caused by glitches on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It was marred further this week as investors began accusing the banks that arranged the IPO of sharing important information about Facebook's business prospects with some clients and not others.

Several shareholders who bought stock in the IPO have filed lawsuits against Facebook, its executives and Morgan Stanley, the IPO's lead underwriter. At question is whether analysts at the big underwriter investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO, and told only a handful of clients about it.

One suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, claims Facebook's IPO documents contained untrue statements and omitted important facts, such as a "severe reduction in revenue growth" that Facebook was experiencing at the time of the offering. The suit's three plaintiffs, who bought Facebook stock on its first day of trading May 18, claim they were damaged in the process.

Morgan Stanley declined to comment. Facebook said the lawsuit is without merit.

Another lawsuit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court in California, holds Facebook and underwriters liable, claiming that Facebook's IPO documents misled investors. Both suits seek class action status on behalf of investors who bought Facebook stock on Friday and lost money.

"No one gets it perfect, as far as saying what the financial results are," said Anthony Michael Sabino, professor at John's University's Peter J. Tobin College of Business. The bottom line, he added, is whether Facebook or the underwriter had material information about Facebook's finances that was not disclosed publicly.

"At this moment, it's still too early to say," he said. "We don't know enough, but this could turn out to be an issue."

What is known is that beginning in March, Facebook began meeting with analysts at the underwriting firms. The gatherings are a customary part of the IPO process and are designed to help analysts understand the company's business so they can make accurate financial projections.

On May 9, day-three of Facebook's pre-IPO roadshow to meet with prospective investors, the company filed an amended IPO document that said its mobile users were growing faster than revenue. According to a person familiar with the matter, Facebook then had another meeting with analysts and told them that based on the new information in the filings, the analysts' forecasts should be at the low end of the range that the company gave them in April. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not publicly authorized to discuss the matter.

Adding to the day's events, Facebook was in talks with the New York Stock Exchange to move its stock from the Nasdaq Stock Market after the botched offering, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The news of the talks was first reported by Reuters.

NYSE spokesman Rich Adamonis said: "There have been no discussions with Facebook regarding switching their listing in light of the events of the last week, nor do we think a discussion along those lines would be appropriate at this time."

A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment.

The Road to CEIC 2012 ? Day One of CEIC v12 - Digital Forensics ...

Jessica BairThe ?Road to CEIC 2012? is a series of blog posts on all things CEIC (@CEIC_Conf), before, during and after, from an insider?s point of view.

All of the work to prepare for CEIC v12 paid off, as the staff made the final touches in the morning of Monday, 21 May, before Registration opened at 9am. The early birds, of the nearly 2,000 expected to attend CEIC v12, lined up to start their conference experience with enthusiasm. New to CEIC is the Guidance Software CISO Summit ? Beyond the Enterprise Perimeter: The Power of Data Visibility & Incident Response, an exclusive event for information security executives and industry thought leaders. The Summit began even before Registration opened, and these dedicated men and women met until 2:30pm to exchange ideas and learn about the importance of digital investigative technology in protecting their organization from risk and threats.

The Summit opened with the Keynote: Data Breaches by the Numbers by Dr. Larry Ponemon (founder, Ponemon Institute) and Bryan Sartin (director of investigative response, Verizon Business) and continued with Matt Keller (Worldwide Information Network Systems) discussing The Last Line of Defense against the APT: Integrating Forensic Response into the Security Stack. The Summit broadened into E-discovery before the lunch break with the Honorable Andrew J. Peck (US Magistrate Judge) and Lee Warren (CISO, United Technologies Corporation) leading an interactive Q&A on Why E-Discovery is Important to Your Company and Why it Should Be to You.

After lunch, the Summit moved into actionable solutions with Getting Ahead of the Inevitable: Implementing an Incident Management Framework, by Mark Carney (vice president of strategic services, FishNet Security). Followed by Shawn McCreight (chief technology officer and founder, Guidance Software), with the capstone The Impact of Forensics on Data Visibility and Enterprise Risk Management.

The Opening Keynote kicked off shortly after 3pm, with Alex Andrianopoulos, vice president of marketing, warming up the standing-room-only crowd for Victor Limongelli, president and chief executive officer, delivering a humorous review of the growth of CEIC. The event was covered live on Twitter, as Victor traced the history of digital forensics over the last 15 years, from an obscure, esoteric endeavor practiced only by small cadre of experts to a conventional discipline employed by tens of thousands. Victor addressed how the continuing proliferation of computing devices, the ever-increasing volumes of data, and the need for visibility into that data, is all driving a forensics explosion. There is a democratization of forensics, with modern solutions requiring ease of use and collaboration between experts. Victor was joined by Ken Basore, senior vice president of R&D and IT, for a live demonstration of EnCase Portable v3 and the EnCase v7 Review Package feature. Jim Borecki, vice president of forensic business unit, also made an appearance to iintroduce the new Tableau TD3 Forensic Duplicator.

The first sessions started at 4:30pm, with 11 from which to choose, a seemly impossible task. The Cyber Response lab track was filled to seating capacity early, and those arriving ?on time? were allowed to stand in the back; as Tim Dillman of FishNet Security took us down the Yellow Brick Evidence Trail to catch attackers. The lab was hands-on with EnCase Enterprise, evolving into an interactive session of sharing tips and tricks between Tim and the attendees.

The E-Discovery Done Right and EnCase App Central Rotundas were very popular throughout the day. The EE-Discovery exhibit drew crowds excited to learn about the integration of EnCase eDiscovery and CaseCentral. Several programmers signed up to join the App Central developer community, where they receive a personal copy of EnCase Forensic to aid in their EnScript creation, with the App Central market place launch planned later in 2012.

The Welcome Reception filled the pool area from 6pm until dark, with attendees enjoying entertainment from Cirque du Soleil and connecting with each other. I enjoyed interacting with friends from my computer forensic examiner days in the US Army CID, with former co-workers who are now partners, with new partners, with colleagues from across the globe, and meeting customers from around the world. Incredibly, over 40 countries are represented as we begin CEIC v12?.a perfect start!

hip_domestics: Home made party decor?

I love the blog http://ohhappyday.com// for stuff like this. I made teeny-tiny party hats for all my son's plastic animals for his second birthday, and it was ridiculously cute.

There is a ton you can do with streamers, if you can get 'em. I used paper lanterns, cheap tiny baskets and streamers and made a sort of "hot air balloon rainbow race" along our living room ceiling. I don't have great pictures, but here's a somewhat decent one -

Golf Modern Classics are the Order of the Day for May?s Historics At Brooklands

An independent auction house in the UK called Historics at Brooklands, is holding a car auction on May 26th focused on modern classics, which have been attracting more and more interest from car fanatics in recent years. In case you wondered, Brooklands does indeed refer to the famous Brooklands Museum, where Historics has its permanent home.

Normally, Historics auctions are all about classic cars, but on May 26th, eponymous, iconic but much more contemporary cars will be the feature, with a particular spotlight on hot hatches. Are you already thinking of Volkswagen, Peugeot and Ford? Well you?re immediately in tune with Historics, who will be selling off at auction some real gems.

Starting off the modern classics hatch sales will be a very rare 1981 Ford Fiesta which has been fully and loving restored back to its former glory from the ground up. Only 30 of these exist, if that, so Historics are expecting someone to pay in the region of ?8,000 for it.

French car manufacturer Peugeot has always been associated with its hot hatches from a couple of decades ago, so it?s no real surprise that a 205 GTI is up for auction by Historics as well. This particular 205 GTI is a 1990 model and amazingly it?s only had one owner up to 2011! What?s more, it only has 84,000 miles on the clock and has been maintained really well. Expecting to achieve about ?6,000, this feisty 1.6-litre hatch has loads of pedigree and will make for a lovely purchase no doubt.

You can?t hold a modern classics hot hatch auction without a Volkswagen Golf, either, and Historics at Brooklands will be putting on sale a 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTi Cabriolet with 79,000 on the clock, which has the rare ?Clipper? styling upgrade package. This one?s being offered with no reserve, so it will be interesting to see what it fetches!

Last but by no means least, a 1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale KAT is up for grabs, also with no reserve. Lancia cars have a great rally history behind them and this Integrale KAT model was only available to buy in Switzerland. It features a 24-valve unit, with a turbocharged top end.? It should prove reliable and offer decent performance and it has been cared for very well by its three owners who all love classic marques.

Solar eclipse: How to safely watch this evening's 'ring of fire'

During this evening's 'ring of fire' solar eclipse, what should be a spectacular display will be seen across much of the American West. Here's how to watch it safely.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / May 20, 2012

The sun is seen partially blocked by the moon through ceilings of ancient buildings during a solar eclipse in central China in 2010.

If you?re one of the lucky ones living across a broad swath of the United States from the Pacific Northwest to north Texas, you?re in for a rare treat this evening.

It?s called an ?annular solar eclipse,? which happens when the moon slides over the sun, blocking out the center and leaving a glowing ring called an ?annulus.?

We could get into ?umbra,? ?penumbra,? and ?antumbra? but you?ll have to Google those yourselves. The main thing is, the difference between an annular solar eclipse and a total eclipse of the sun has to do with how far away the moon is from the earth.

The closer to the earth it is, the larger the moon appears ? blocking out more of the sun. When the moon is farther away from the earth, it appears smaller, leaving that ?ring of fire? when it appears to pass in front of the sun. Right now, the moon is at its greatest distance from the earth, hence an especially wide fiery ring.

Actually, it?s not only Americans along that swath who?ll be able to witness this very occasional solar-lunar event. (The last one was in 1994.)

It?ll start in southern China, then move across the southern coast of Japan, crossing the Pacific just south of the Aleutian Islands before hitting the US near the Oregon-California border. (Speaking of ?ring of fire,? the Aleutians are part of another ?ring of fire? ? the volcanic rim around the Pacific from South America to New Zealand. It has nothing to do with Johnny Cash, however.)

These graphics by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office are especially good.

The main advice in observing this evening?s annular eclipse and its ?ring of fire? is be careful.

Ron Hipschman, who describes himself on Twitter as the ?loose cannon at the Exploratorium? in San Francisco, offers this warning:

?As a kid, did you ever take a magnifying glass out into the sun and burn leaves? If so, you probably remember that when the focused sunlight coming through the lens was refracted and concentrated to a small spot, the energy available there was truly remarkable. Guess what? You have a lens just like that in your eye. If you look at the sun, your eye-lens will concentrate the sun's light and focus it to a very small spot on the back of your retina. This can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. Additionally, there are no pain sensors back there so you won't even know it's happening! Have I scared the willies out of you? Good!?

On this website, Mr. Hipschman gives directions for safely observing any solar eclipse.

As you might have done in your junior high school science class, you can build a pinhole projector using a long box, a piece of aluminum foil, a pin, and a sheet of white paper. What a great opportunity to do something with your kids!

This site shows how to build such a projector using a dark-colored plastic cup, wax paper, scissors, a rubber band, and a pushpin. The Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City has good directions for making a simple pinhole projector here.

?Getting even more basic, you can use your own hands,? Hipschman explains. ?Just hold up both hands with your fingers overlapping at right angles. The holes between your fingers make pinholes.?

Clark Planetarium director Seth Jarvis says forget about the old suggestions of putting soot from a candle flame on a piece of glass, using exposed black-and-white film, or doubling up on sunglasses. None offer adequate protection, and he recommends against trying to use welder?s goggles to peer at the sun unless they are rated for arc-welding (at least grade 14).

So enjoy this evening?s light show, but do it carefully.

Bee Gees' Robin Gibb Dead At 62

Singer had battled colon and liver cancer and lapsed into a coma last month.

Bee Gees member Robin Gibb died Sunday (May 20) after a long battle with cancer; he was 62 years old.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," read a statement confirming the news. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

See photos of Robin Gibb throughout his career.

Gibb, who had been battling colon and liver cancer, lapsed into a weeklong coma last month. In February, doctors said he'd made a "spectacular" recovery from the disease, but he was soon back in the hospital for surgery. The "Saturday Night Fever" singer had bowel surgery almost two years ago for an unrelated condition, at which time doctors discovered a tumor and diagnosed him with colon cancer. It appeared as if the cancer was in remission as recently as March.

Robin was one-third of the Brothers Gibb, alongside lead singer Barry and twin brother Maurice, who died in 2003 from complications of abdominal surgery. The siblings created the Bee Gees as teens in Brisbane, Australia, in 1958. They made their initial impact on pop during the Beatles-led British invasion of the mid-'60s, sending "New York Mining Disaster 1941" into the top 20 and beginning a string of hits that would last through 1972's "Run to Me." The '71 smash "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" reached the top of the charts.

The Bee Gees' style shifted during the disco era, and their success with funky, dance-oriented pieces such as "Jive Talkin'" and "You Should Be Dancing" set them up for the pop juggernaut of "Saturday Night Fever."

With falsetto vocals and irresistible rhythms, the trio became one of disco's most resonant symbols. Three Bee Gees songs from the film's soundtrack, "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," reached #1 on the Billboard chart. The "Saturday Night Fever" album is pop's best-selling soundtrack, having moved over 40 million copies.

Please share your condolences for Gibb's family, friends and fans in the comments.

Hands-on with the Electric Imp at Maker Faire (video)

Yesterday at Maker Faire Bay Area 2012 we visited the Electric Imp booth to chat with the startup's founders and get some hands-on time with the tiny wireless computer. What is the Electric Imp? It's a module containing an ARM Cortex M3 SoC with embedded WiFi that's built into an SD card form factor. While the device looks just like and SD card, it's not pin-compatible with the standard -- the idea is to leverage a reliable and affordable connector for the Electric Imp. The module is not very useful on its own -- it only comes to life when inserted into one of several boards, which provide the Electric Imp with power and access to the real world. In turn the device gives these boards a brain and an Internet connection. Eventually the company hopes that appliance manufacturers will incorporate Electric Imp slots into products to make them network aware.

We talked with CEO Hugo Fiennes (formerly with Apple) about the past, present and future of the Electric Imp so hit the break to read more and to watch our hands-on video.

Research provides new clues on how ApoE4 affects Alzheimer's risk

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Common variants of the ApoE gene are strongly associated with the risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease, but the gene's role in the disease has been unclear. Now, researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health have found that in mice, having the most risky variant of ApoE damages the blood vessels that feed the brain.

The researchers found that the high-risk variant, ApoE4, triggers an inflammatory reaction that weakens the blood-brain barrier, a network of cells and other components that lines brain's brain vessels. Normally, this barrier allows nutrients into the brain and keeps harmful substances out.

The study appears today in Nature, and was led by Berislav Zlokovic, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Neurodegeneration and Regeneration at the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

"Understanding the role of ApoE4 in Alzheimer's disease may be one of the most important avenues to a new therapy," Dr. Zlokovic said. "Our study shows that ApoE4 triggers a cascade of events that damages the brain's vascular system," he said, referring to the system of blood vessels that supply the brain.

The ApoE gene encodes a protein that helps regulate the levels and distribution of cholesterol and other lipids in the body. The gene exists in three varieties. ApoE2 is thought to play a protective role against both Alzheimer's and heart disease, ApoE3 is believed to be neutral, and ApoE4 confers a higher risk for both conditions. Outside the brain, the ApoE4 protein appears to be less effective than other versions at clearing away cholesterol; however, inside the brain, exactly how ApoE4 contributes to Alzheimer's disease has been a mystery.

Dr. Zlokovic and his team studied several lines of genetically engineered mice, including one that lacks the ApoE gene and three other lines that produce only human ApoE2, ApoE3 or ApoE4. Mice normally have only a single version of ApoE. The researchers found that mice whose bodies made only ApoE4, or made no ApoE at all, had a leaky blood-brain barrier. With the barrier compromised, harmful proteins in the blood made their way into the mice's brains, and after several weeks, the researchers were able to detect loss of small blood vessels, changes in brain function, and a loss of connections between brain cells.

"The study demonstrates that damage to the brain's vascular system may play a key role in Alzheimer's disease, and highlights growing recognition of potential links between stroke and Alzheimer's-type dementia," said Roderick Corriveau, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which helped fund the research. "It also suggests that we might be able to decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease among ApoE4 carriers by improving their vascular health."

The researchers also found that ApoE2 and ApoE3 help control the levels of an inflammatory molecule called cyclophilin A (CypA), but ApoE4 does not. Levels of CypA were raised about five-fold in blood vessels of mice that produce only ApoE4. The excess CypA then activated an enzyme, called MMP-9, which destroys protein components of the blood-brain barrier. Treatment with the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine A, which inhibits CypA, preserved the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and lessened damage to the brain. An inhibitor of the MMP-9 enzyme had similar beneficial effects. In prior studies, inhibitors of this enzyme have been shown to reduce brain damage after stroke in animal models.

"These findings point to cyclophilin A as a potential new drug target for Alzheimer's disease," said Suzana Petanceska, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute on Aging (NIA), which also funded Dr. Zlokovic's study. "Many population studies have shown an association between vascular risk factors in mid-life, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and the risk for Alzheimer's in late-life. We need more research aimed at deepening our understanding of the mechanisms involved and to test whether treatments that reduce vascular risk factors may be helpful against Alzheimer's."

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults, and affects more than 5 million Americans. A hallmark of the disease is a toxic protein fragment called beta-amyloid that accumulates in clumps, or plaques, within the brain. Gene variations that cause higher levels of beta-amyloid are associated with a rare type of Alzheimer's that appears early in life, between age 30 and 60.

However, it is the ApoE4 gene variant that is most strongly tied to the more common, late-onset type of Alzheimer's disease. Inheriting a single copy of ApoE4 from a parent increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease by about three-fold. Inheriting two copies, one from each parent, increases the risk by about 12-fold.

Dr. Zlokovic's study and others point to a complex interplay between beta-amyloid and ApoE4. On the one hand, beta-amyloid is known to build up in and damage blood vessels and cause bleeding into the brain. On the other hand, Dr. Zlokovic's data suggest that ApoE4 can damage the vascular system independently of beta-amyloid. He theorizes that this damage makes it harder to clear beta-amyloid from the brain. Some therapies under investigation for Alzheimer's focus on destroying amyloid plaques, but therapies designed to compensate for ApoE4 might help prevent the plaques from forming, he said.

Lady Gaga Under Fire After 'PopStarsDontEat' Comment | Photo ...

11:43 am on May 15, 2012

What was clearly intended as a jokey tweet lamenting the rigorous diet and exercise routine she is currently undertaking to prepare for her 110-date Born This Way Ball has put Lady Gaga in the crosshairs of some angry fans and eating-disorder organizations. On Tuesday, the pop star tweeted, ?Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay.? Some fans thought the tweet wasn?t exactly keeping with the pop star?s ?You?re perfect the way you are? message and that her choice of the ?#PopStarsDontEat? hashtag could be misinterpreted as encouraging eating disorders because she posits herself as a role model to her fans.

The National Eating Disorder Association even weighed in, hitting its own Twitter account to write, ?Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting??

MTV Buzzworthy has an Open Letter To Lady Gaga While it seems clear that Gaga was joking ? who hasn?t dove into a salad wishing it was something else? ? the comment does appear out of character for the star, who has spoken publicly about her own struggles with an eating disorder as a teen. Using that particular hashtag might have been a poor choice, but it?s safe to say Lady Gaga wasn?t knowingly making light of eating disorders ? and, otherwise, wasn?t she mostly just encouraging exercise and healthy eating? Gaga tweets often about all sort of less-than-healthful habits, from drinking (?after 12 margaritas my phone was confiscated?) to, well, other things (?princess xena of xanaxland has lil secrets in her inbox?). Why she is being scrutinized for making an observation about something we already know ? that celebrities engage in intense fitness regimens to meet the unrealistic expectations placed on their appearance ? is kind of a mystery. But, you know, totally appropriate and necessary reason for outrage, everyone. Sound off on Gaga?s #PopSingersDontEat tweet in the comments below!
