Addressing the 85th foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in New Delhi, the president favoured balanced use of fertiliser.
He also launched Kissan sms portal to help farmers alert on weather conditions.
Officers can send SMS to farmers belonging to their area of jurisdiction or a part of it by accessing the website.
The Kisaan SMS portal, (www.Farmer.Gov.In) which? launched on Tuesday, aims at reaching information, advisories and services through short message service (SMS) to more than 12 crore farmers across the country, an Agriculture Ministry statement said.
Farmers will need to register for this service by calling Kisaan Call Centre on the toll free number 1800-180-1551 or through the web portal, it said adding the peasants can also access the website directly.
From weather forecast to farm planning to marketing of the produce, such information will be given via SMS, it said.
Advisories and alerts on disease or pest outbreaks, selection of fertilisers and soil test results -- all farm assistance will be made available by the government to farmers, it added.
Officers of various departments, experts and scientists in research institutions and in the field will use this portal for disseminating information, giving topical and seasonal advisories and providing services through SMSs to farmers in their local languages, it said.
